Afghanistan vs Bangladesh 1st ODI
Bangladesh have suffered heavy defeats against South Africa in both Tests and ODIs, but can Najmul Shanto lead his side to success against Afghanistan? Find out during this three-match series in UAE.
AFG win the toss and opt to bat first. Hashmatullah Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi begin well, scoring an 85-run stand. However, Bangladesh bowlers apply pressure which ultimately result in them scoring just 235 runs on their scoresheet.
Bangladesh’s bowlers did an outstanding job limiting Afghan run scoring opportunities, yet their batting faltered at crucial moments in the end despite Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan providing good resistance in their middle orders.
Though both Afghan spinners lost wickets during the process, both of them performed impressively. Ghazanfar was particularly impressive with six wickets coming his way within just 6.3 overs! Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, and Shoriful Islam all did their bit to contribute by picking up wickets as well.
WICKET: 136/6 WICKET: 136/6 Bangladesh are struggling to manage Afghanistan’s bowlers’ spin threat and lose another wicket due to it. Mahmudullah fails to reach Rashid’s googly and it strikes Mahmudullah’s stumps before disappearing off the wicket-keeping gloves.
Bangladesh’s innings has taken an irreparable downward turn since lunch on Day 3. Their middle and lower orders are struggling to score runs and appear unlikely to reach their target of 327 runs by day’s end.
Bangladesh were on the cusp of making a decent score until Ghazanfar’s brilliant spell brought their innings tumbling to 143 all out, taking out Tanzid Hasan, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mushfiqur Rahim, Rishad Hossain Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam among many others. Ghazanfar now holds one of the highest individual bowling figures ever seen between Bangladesh and Afghanistan for an ODI match, becoming their leading wicket taker and well loved by teammates and fans alike.
Afghanistan vs Bangladesh 2nd ODI
Afghanistan will aim to maintain their momentum following an impressive performance in the opening ODI against Bangladesh in Sharjah, thanks to solid middle order play and world-class spinner Rashid Khan and youngster Allah Ghazanfar. They could potentially claim the series win this time around!
Hashmatullah Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi led Afghanistan’s innings in the opening ODI by providing steady batting to help post a defendable total of 235 runs. Afghanistan’s bowling attack, led by Rashid and newcomer Allah Ghazanfar will present Bangladesh with a major challenge on this slow and spin-friendly pitch.
Bangladesh was in danger of losing after making an inauspicious start to their innings, falling to 16/4 at one point before captain Najmul Shanto steered them back with 47 off 48 deliveries from Shanto to keep Bangladesh alive in pursuit of an unlikely late comeback. With Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed providing some respite with their bowling attacks, but Bangladesh will need to improve their batting in this second match-up.
Bangladesh initially took it slow in their innings against Afghanistan spinners, not taking too many risks against Afghanistan spinners. But their innings has since started unravelling rapidly as they have lost three wickets within 10 minutes – leaving a higher run-rate at present; for Bangladesh to reach 300 they will require better shot selection and temperament in their batting if they hope to come close. Meanwhile, sheen on the wicket is beginning to fade which could make batting challenging during its final stages of play.
Afghanistan vs Bangladesh 3rd ODI
Bangladesh struggled to contain Afghan batsmen after losing its openers early. Nahid Rana’s explosive new-ball spell provided some momentum, but Bangladesh let Afghan batters back in through missed chances such as dropped catch off Tanzid Hasan and missed stumping on Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
Mehidy Miraz and Mahmudullah found it difficult to score runs early on; once Mehidy Miraz and Mahmudullah formed a partnership, however, runs began flowing more freely. Miraz was caught out to a short ball in the 10th over, however veteran campaigner Azmatullah Omarzai maintained momentum by providing some timely hitting during middle overs.
Afghanistan took some time to settle into their innings in the opening half, with their batsmen initially struggling with Nahid Rana’s fast pace on what wasn’t an overly fast pitch. Once their duo began scoring at an impressive run-a-ball rate and applying pressure to Bangladesh.
Bangladesh struggled to keep their run chase going in the second half. Leg spinner Rashid Khan played an instrumental role in their collapse; having Tanzid Hasan hit him for four with a slow and dipping delivery; as well as Zakir Hasan being sent back after calling for runs; ultimately leading him to fall four runs short of reaching 50 runs before falling short himself on 4. Mustafizur Rahman picked up two wickets himself, having both Hridoy and Tanzid Hasan caught at slip.
Shoriful Islam gave Azmatullah Omarzai one off-spinner Shoriful Islam’s slot ball on off, where Omarzai managed to move his front foot clear before hitting it over long on for six! The crowd went absolutely wild.
Afghanistan vs Bangladesh 4th ODI
Bangladesh will come back into Sharjah after their March tour looking to reverse their series-opening defeat with an emphatic win in Sharjah’s inaugural Test match against them, featuring Rashid Khan at his best and their batting lineup showing signs of resilience – promising an intriguing match up between both teams.
The hosts began their innings slowly but eventually found their groove. Mehidy scored a patient 66 and Mahmudullah made up his part with an excellent run-a-ball 98 to set them on course for an excellent total, yet their hopes of surpassing Bangladesh were dashed by spinners; Rana, bowling on debut, was unable to keep Bangladeshi batters quiet for long and both Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman allowed too many runs from their spinners.
Bangladesh lost four for 19 in just 10 overs as Afghanistan regained control of the game. Nabi struck first when Tanzid Hasan was caught slicing to cover point for 19, then in the 15th over he dismissed Towhid Hridoy off a mistimed pull towards short midwicket by Towhid Hridoy with another mistimed pull; Mehidy was caught behind off Rashid in 16th over and, despite Mahmudullah’s late comeback attempt, Bangladesh never recovered fully from that blowback by Afghanistan.
Once Gurbaz and Naib had fallen, Omarzai took control of Afghanistan’s innings; earlier adding a 100-run fourth wicket stand with Gurbaz for Afghanistan to reach 184-3. With three balls to spare remaining on his over, Omarzai finally concluded it by depositing Nabi over long-on to secure victory with three deliveries remaining in his spell.
Bangladesh will likely be disappointed to have lost this series, yet should take heart from their improved performances in recent matches. Though they still have much work to do before competing at the Champions Trophy later in 2018, this match provided a strong starting point to their ODI season. Specifically, batsmen need to regain form at the top of the order while bowlers improve discipline and accuracy on slow pitches like Sharjah Cricket Stadium in order to challenge some of the world’s finest sides.
