From 1-5 October at PCA Stadium in Mohali, India won the toss and elected to bat. Unfortunately, after losing its opening two wickets quickly their batting collapsed before Vijay and Pujara combined well to reach 237/7 at the end of day four.
Australia scored two centuries during their innings: Steve Smith notching one, joined by Fifties from Marnus Labuschagne and debutant Will Pucovski.
India struggled against Australia’s fast and spin bowlers; with only Mohammed Kaif scoring over 50 runs before Australia declared on 6/312 with an aim to beat India by 407 runs and win the match.
On the fifth day, India lost Zaheer Khan early, but VVS Laxman and MS Dhoni rebuilt their innings – until Dhoni was run out after trying to play a late cut off Bollinger; Tendulkar soon followed, caught behind when trying to hit short deliveries from Nathan Lyon;
Harbhajan Singh and Ishant Sharma shared remaining wickets; though Harbhajan Singh may have had an opportunity at making his century but was caught deep instead.
Australia won both the match and series to retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy, leaving India heartbroken after they lost in Perth. India made an impressive start with their batting, only for it all to collapse once their middle order started playing against them and blow them away – leading by just over 150 runs at one point before succumbing in the second innings.
This match marked India’s first win in their own country since 2004. Rohit Sharma became the first Indian captain since Sachin Tendulkar to triumph against Australia at home since 2009.
Additionally, this Test match became famous due to a controversial incident between Rohit Sharma and Cameron Green that resulted in heated arguments that ultimately saw them being removed by umpires.

Australia will look to end their three-match ODI drought against Sri Lanka by winning one of these matches, hoping to record its inaugural ever ODI win in Perth and be buoyed by Steve Smith and Travis Head’s stellar century from their previous game against Sri Lanka.
India will be strengthened by Kuldeep Yadav’s return from T20I duty, having been released to focus solely on ODIs ahead of 2026 ICC World Cup preparation. Rohit Sharma could become only the second Indian player ever to play 500 ODI matches while Jasprit Bumrah looks in great form before this series.
Australia’s injury woes will remain an important consideration as they begin this series in Perth. Pat Cummins remains sidelined due to lumbar bone stress while Josh Inglis remains out due to calf strain. Adam Zampa and Alex Carey will miss due to Sheffield Shield commitments; Nathan Ellis will make his Optus Stadium debut.
Australia and India have each won their last four one-day international matches (ODI), and they’ll look to keep this impressive streak going when the teams face each other on Sunday.
A win for Australia would put them in prime position to claim the white-ball championship, while a draw would leave both sides tied on points at the top of rankings; otherwise a loss would relegate Australia to fourth position; tie or no result will put them fifth overall; winning team will receive four points while losing team will receive just two.
