The Ohio State Buckeyes are an American football team that represents Ohio State University in the Big Ten Conference. They are coached by Urban Meyer.

Ohio State boasts a long and proud football tradition and is perennially competitive for the Big Ten championship, but has never managed to claim it. However, this year’s team has a good shot at finally breaking that streak by possessing a top-ranked roster with one of the nation’s premier defense units and an acceptable offense; its rivals’ offerings may even surpass Ohio State.

Ohio State Buckeyes have long held the No. 1 rankings in both AP and Coaches polls, as well as being three-time Rose Bowl and two-time Cotton Bowl champions, nine national championships, 41 conference championships and six perfect seasons (no losses or ties) during which no losses or ties occurred; they have produced seven Heisman Trophy winners over time.

Les Horvath became Ohio State’s inaugural African American player to win both the Heisman Trophy and All-American award in 1946. Ohio State returned to the Rose Bowl in 1947, and this time took home victory. A tightly-contested match, with numerous opportunities for Ohio State to score late. But a John Bledsoe dash at the last moment prevented their winning attempt and preserved an undefeated season for Ohio State.

At the 2022 Rose Bowl, Ohio State and California squared off in an action-packed contest that showcased both teams at their best. This was only their second meeting between unbeaten teams, making this game both historic and memorable for both squads. O.J Simpson won Heisman Trophy while Terrelle Pryor from Ohio State led Ohio State with over 200 yards thrown between them both; keeping USC off balance, Ohio State maintained control for most of the matchup.

Ohio State and Oregon last met for an historic contest at the 2023 Rose Bowl, with Ohio State winning 27-24 and recording their fifth Rose Bowl victory of this decade.

Chic Harley was one of the finest players in Ohio State history. Ohio State decided to hire Paul Brown, an assistant coach from Massillon Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio, following their loss against USC. Within days, Brown altered Ohio State’s offensive style and implemented highly structured practices; his teams quickly became successful; winning four Big Ten championships and two BCS bowl games during his tenure as coach.

Ohio State has competed three times in the Cotton Bowl since 1921. Although Ohio State lost to Michigan that first time around, they rebounded to win their rematch the following year and become the inaugural national champions.

Ohio Field had limited capacity of only 20,000 spectators; its replacement, Harley Stadium (nicknamed “The Horseshoe”) soon replaced it at the center of campus and earned itself another nickname – this time “The Horseshoe”.

Woody Hayes took over as Buckeye head coach during the 1957 season and led them to an unprecedented perfect regular season, as well as winning Rose Bowl and sharing national title with Auburn for back-to-back college titles for only the second time ever in college football history. Ohio State attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, but failed to score and ultimately fell by 24-14.

Jim Tressel took over coaching duties for Ohio State in 2001 and led the program to six consecutive bowl appearances, including two BCS bowl games. Under his leadership, the Buckeyes re-established themselves as a national powerhouse and captured the 2002 national championship.
