John Wright
John Wright was a compassionate and spirited leader who had a gift for building relationships and empowering others. He had a deep sense of purpose and was committed to advancing justice and equality for all people in New York City.
He built his firm into a hub of service and social change, supporting many clients and coalitions. He also served on the boards of several non-profits, including Harlem United and the Brooklyn Community Foundation. He was an inspiring and influential voice in the community and will be missed.
He coached India from 2000 to 2005, during which time he took the team to its highest level of success – winning a Test series against Australia (including a famous Kolkata test in which VVS Laxman made 281 not out), drawing four-match Test series in Australia during Steve Waugh’s final tour, and reaching the 2003 Cricket World Cup final.
Wright is survived by his mother Claudia, his partner Regina Woods, his sons Caleb, Elijah, and Jaylin, and a number of aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
His home is a museum of his life and work, with walls covered in pictures and clippings. He can tell you the street address of every house he has lived in, and he can remember the names of all of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even some of his great-great-grandchildren. His memory is incredible; he can remember lyrics to songs, but says he can’t read music because of his dyslexia. He has a strong and deep spiritual faith, which he lives out through his generous spirit, love of music, and love for his family.
Gautam Gambhir
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) holds a process to select a head coach. This process involves sending out applications to candidates from around the world, reviewing their qualifications and presenting them with a vision for advancing Indian cricket. The candidate who puts forward the most compelling vision is selected for the position.
Gambhir was a left-handed opening batsman who played domestic cricket for Delhi, and also captained Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League.
He was one of the most prolific run-scorers in both Test and ODI cricket. He scored over 44,000 runs in both formats of the game, and earned 12 Man of the Match awards in ODIs. He also scored a total of nine Test centuries.
In 2008, he was chosen to open the batting with Virender Sehwag in the T20 World Cup, and he performed brilliantly. He remained at the top of the ICC rankings for a period of time, and his performance was so impressive that he was briefly named the best batsman in the world.
Gambhir made two short comebacks to the Test team, but was unable to cement his place in the side. However, he was a regular in the ODI team and captained the team in six ODI matches from late 2010 to early 2011. He was instrumental in India’s win in the 2007 World Twenty20 and in the 2011 Cricket World Cup final.
Despite his struggles at the International level, Gambhir enjoyed success at club level. He captained KKR to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, and mentored them to more victories in 2024.
After retiring from cricket, Gambhir began a political career, and was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2024, he was appointed the head coach of India’s cricket team, and he has been successful in leading the nation to victory in several tournaments. He has also made a name for himself in the political arena, and has been able to win many votes for his party.
Rahul Dravid
Dravid, whose coaching tenure ended after India won the T20 World Cup in Barbados last month, is known for his patience and the ability to work on little details that are not immediately apparent. He has been credited with developing stable middle-order batsmen and building depth in the Indian team.
He has also guided younger players to their first Test centuries and has helped them reach international level. In the short time he has been coach of India A and India Under-19, he has already made significant strides in improving the team’s performance.
Rahul Dravid was the first batsman to score 10,000 international runs for India and is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. His batting technique was unusual, involving many small movements and frequent pauses. He was a slow starter, but he could hit the ball long and far, even from difficult positions. He also used his feet well and was a master of timing.
During his career, he accumulated many individual milestones and made several historic partnerships with other top-order batsmen. He was involved in the first ODI double century partnership, with Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar, as well as India’s first triple century, with Laxman and Venkataraghavan Samarth.
He also held the record for most consecutive test half-centuries until being beaten by Virender Sehwag. He also compiled the second highest number of test hundreds for India until being surpassed by Sachin Tendulkar.
In 2004 he succeeded Sourav Ganguly as the captain of the Indian test and ODI teams. He led the team to their first ever test victory on South African soil and scored a career-best 270 in the third test against Pakistan at Rawalpindi. However, he later criticised his failures in the role and stated that he had allowed Greg Chappell to make too many decisions for him.
Despite his poor form in the later stages of his career, he continued to play regularly for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy. In 2009, he was named the ICC Test Player of the Year, and briefly became the number one ranked batsman in the world after the ICC’s July rankings update.
Support Staff
Being the head coach of a national cricket team is not an easy job. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) typically evaluates coaching positions based on performance and tenure. Unlike in other sports, where players’ performances are scrutinized by the media and public, cricket coaches operate in the shadows, with only their coaching methods and results under scrutiny.
There is no magic bullet for success; each coach has a unique approach that suits the team’s needs and goals. Some are drillmasters, while others are visionaries. The best coaches are both, and the team’s success is determined by their ability to align with the long-term vision of the organization.
The Indian men’s national cricket team represents the country in international cricket. It is governed by the BCCI and competes in all forms of the sport, including Test matches, one-day internationals, and Twenty20 internationals. The team is regarded as one of the strongest in world cricket and has won numerous awards, including two World Cup titles.
In addition to the head coach, the team has a supporting staff that includes assistant coaches, bowling and batting coaches, strength and conditioning trainers, and nutritionists. These professionals work closely with the team’s captain and vice-captain to develop strategies for improving the team’s performance. They also assist with training and practice sessions.
The support staff is an integral part of a national cricket team, and they are usually paid significantly more than the head coach. The salary for the head coach of an elite cricket team is estimated to be around INR 9.5 to INR 10 crore per year, making it one of the highest-paid jobs in the world.
The selection process for the Head Coach Of Indian Cricket Team is a lengthy and structured process. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) invites applications from eligible candidates across the world who meet specific criteria.
Shortlisted candidates may be invited for interviews with the BCCI’s selection committee, where they present their qualifications, coaching experience, and vision for advancing Indian cricket. The candidate selected is expected to help improve the team’s performance and support its long-term goals.
