England National Football Team
Gareth Southgate’s side appeared poised for victory against Serbia before an oddly slow second half allowed them back into the game. Yet they managed to hold on for victory at Gelsenkirchen that should give them confidence for future Group C matches.
Jude Bellingham’s early header gave England an advantage they could build upon, yet their overall performance was uninspiring and will have to improve considerably in order to meet all of the high expectations placed upon them.
Trippier works the ball to Walker, who attempts to dribble into space in Serbia’s box and shoots from just outside penalty area – however he was ruled offside by the linesman and it had an adverse affect. Meanwhile, Bellingham twists away from Milinkovic-Savic to run into box but Orsato pulled him back after barging into him, prompting a free-kick by referee.
Foden
Foden made an impressionful debut for England against Iceland and is set to become a key member of their three Lions squad this summer. An exciting talent, Foden can both help lead an attack while providing cover for defence.
England regain possession and move the ball downfield towards their right as Alexander-Arnold and Bellingham exchange passes, feeding Walker who surges forward before finding himself space to shoot from outside the box but cannot quite muster enough power to send it over the bar.
Serbia begins to show more attacking intent and Milinkovic-Savic looks to feed Vlahovic on the edge of England’s box, hoping he can hook over Pickford – however this pattern of play has shifted significantly over the course of recent minutes.
Trippier
England are maintaining possession and looking dangerous at times, yet are lacking that spark that they need. Trippier goes down injured and looks likely to have to leave the field of play immediately.
He’s clearly injured and being assisted off of the field by trainers; Three Lions fans applaud as they cheer him off to the tunnel.
Mladenovic’s arrival has altered the pattern of play significantly and allowed Serbia to push more players forward, but they cannot find an efficient pass into the box.
Lukic attempted to play Vlahovic a first-time ball, but Rice quickly intervened to cut it out – an extremely dangerous cross from which Vlahovic could have scored had he connected properly.
Bellingham
England dominate the right flank, and Alexander-Arnold win a corner kick from which they deliver but it’s cleared away by Rajkovic. Bellingham then commits a silly foul by chasing after Kostic; Gudelj receives his first yellow card of the match as punishment.
Foden attempts to weave his way into the box, but his pass inside is sloppy and lost. Unable to control a low Saka cross which runs across his goal face and out for a goal kick, Foden passes out for goal kick.
Milinkovic-Savic played a low ball to Jovic, who should have scored but couldn’t control it. Unfortunately for England they lost control and Southgate brought on Kobbie Mainoo for Bellingham as they looked to break into the game once again; Bellingham won another free kick but his delivery went wide of the far post and Bellingham himself lost possession during this throw-in due to poor delivery which Serbia managed to clear away easily; losing an aerial challenge and being booked by Mr Orsato for bad fouling left his team could never regain possession.
Kane
Starting slow as both teams try to find their footing, England made the early running with opportunities. Kane dropped deep to recycle possession before finding Alexander-Arnold who shot wide of goal for goal kick before Gallagher won a free-kick inside Serbian territory; Foden tried but couldn’t connect.
Serbia are beginning to dominate possession, as Milinkovic-Savic attempts to send Vlahovic a first-time through ball, but Rice steps in and blocks it.
Southgate makes a switch, replacing Alexander-Arnold with Bellingham. Bellingham almost manages to surprise England with a quick pass from the left byline but failed to connect a cross. Finally, England break and Bellingham fails to bring down Pickford’s long ball for another chance at victory for Three Lions.
Rice
England maintain control of the ball for an extended period, but England are beginning to ease off on their opponent more. Bellingham finds himself open near the left byline and attempts to cross from there but his attempt fails, leaving England vulnerable at their goalline.
Southgate makes his first change by substituting Gallagher for Alexander-Arnold, becoming the youngest ever Three Lions World Cup qualifier ever to represent them and having long been on Gareth Southgate’s radar.
Gudelj tries to steal possession from Walker inside his own half, but is foiled by Manchester United defender Jesse Lingard. Referee Orsato books Gudelj for possession theft.
Saka
Jude Bellingham’s early header gives England a 1-0 advantage against Serbia in the Euro 2024 Group C opener at Gelsenkirchen’s Arena AufSchalke, though Gareth Southgate’s team struggled to create clear-cut chances against an efficient Serbia team.
Zivkovic rushes into the box from the right, only to be pulled back by three-man defensive delegation. Bellingham then attempts to find Foden with an ambitious crossfield pass but cannot control it and so referee Orsato waves play on.
Aleksandar Mitrovic leads Serbia forward and features alongside talented players such as Fulham’s Sasa Lukic and AC Milan’s Dusan Tadic – but the former Yugoslavs struggled at the 2022 World Cup due to defensive fragility – evidenced by their 4-1 win against Cyprus as their last competitive fixture.
Alexander-Arnold
Alexander-Arnold is an England and Liverpool right-back who has made an immediate impact this season, playing an instrumental role in their title challenge and becoming the club’s youngest ever European competition captain at age 20, taking over from Virgil Van Dijk on 9 December. Additionally, Alexander-Arnold maintains strong ties to local communities as patron of An Hour for Others charity.
As a youth player for England, he represented them at various youth levels before making his senior debut under Gareth Southgate in 2018. Since then he has become a key part of Southgate’s side – starting all England games at the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League competition and being selected as their fourth teenager starter at that competition.
His ability to pass the ball has drawn comparisons with Lionel Messi and Talksport journalist Tony Cascarino believes he is one of the finest full-backs currently. Additionally, his maternal grandmother hails from New York while it’s possible his father may have also been born there.
Gallagher
Gallagher has been England manager since 2021, serving on both the backroom staff for both World Cup 2022 and UEFA Euro 2024 as an integral member. Additionally, he represented his nation at various youth levels before subsequently playing regularly for Manchester City during their Premier League era.
England have enjoyed early possession, yet have struggled to convert that into clear-cut opportunities. Bellingham and Saka have provided solid defensive contributions while Rice appears assured in midfield; however, more from Kane and his forward line is required.
