Semi-Final

The South Africa men’s national cricket team, more commonly referred to as the Proteas, represent South Africa in international cricket competition.

A member of both Cricket South Africa and International Cricket Council, its name derives from South Africa’s national flower (Protea cynaroides or “King Protea”) while it was administered by Cricket South Africa.

As one of history’s most successful teams – having twice won World Cup glory – and currently ranked number two on ICC World Twenty20 rankings

New Zealand edged out South Africa by nine wickets to advance to the T20 World Cup Final. Tim Seifert and Finn Allen stood out with their bat, both hitting fours and sixes for New Zealand.

After an early onslaught, the Proteas struggled to keep pace with their target. Black Caps bowlers maintained pressure, decreasing run rate. Seifert was caught off fast bowler Lungi Ngidi before Allen reached his half century in 19 balls before both wickets fell quickly reducing South Africa to 113/6 by the 16th over.

Aiden Markram of South Africa became the next victim, falling to a spectacular diving catch by Daryl Mitchell off Rachin Ravindra.

Soon thereafter, David Miller followed suit and also fell victim to Mitchell in the deep. At 115/6, South Africa were in jeopardy of being knocked out, yet Tristan Stubbs and Marco Jansen pulled them back onto track with a 73-run partnership off 48 balls that brought back hope for survival.

South Africa scored 169/8 in 20 overs, setting themselves a target of 173 to win the match. They appeared poised for success when they reached 139/2 but Lockie Ferguson hit the final ball for a six.

Chris Gayle established a world record by scoring 100 in just 47 balls, but New Zealand captain Finn Allen set another benchmark by reaching his unbeaten century in 33 balls – breaking that mark as well. They will look to emulate their victory of 1996 on home ground as they face India for an exciting final. Both teams should give it their all in what promises to be an intense encounter – good luck to both of them!
