ICC Champions Trophy 2025

The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy marked the ninth edition of this tournament, hosted jointly by Pakistan and United Arab Emirates and featuring 15 matches across four venues in both nations from 19 February to 9 March 2025.

All eight One Day International teams qualified to take part, although hosts Pakistan were eliminated early due to an underperforming performance en route to being dethroned as champions by India who beat New Zealand in the final match to take home this trophy.

This tournament took place across four venues – National Stadium in Karachi, Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium – with each team playing round robin matches against its fellow group members in both groups.

Australia and New Zealand both exited before reaching the semi-finals; leaving India and South Africa vying to advance.

Both teams had an opportunity to reach the finals, but both struggled over the final few matches. Both lost to Bangladesh in their opener before falling short against Sri Lanka before rebounding with a victory against West Indies in their next encounter.

After India defeated Sri Lanka, both teams were tied on points. Pakistan and India would play each other to determine who would earn the final position; both were placed into one group; their results against one another determined the top two teams within it.

Bookmakers consider both teams favorites to win and take home the title. India are currently at the top of ICC ODI rankings and defeated Pakistan during their initial meeting this tournament, while England and Australia sit seventh and eighth.

Virat Kohli leads all run scorers so far with 490 runs scored while also ranking second overall in terms of batting average behind Rohit Sharma; these two will meet again in the semifinals.

Match 1

The Black Caps have made a triumphant start to their campaign and remain undefeated in this competition, winning four matches and amassing more runs than any side in each contest.

While South Africa have yet to secure victory due to an inexperienced squad and weak top order performances, New Zealand have impressed throughout all their matches and look likely to reach the final.

Starting 15 March in Mount Maunganui and concluding 25 March at Christchurch, both teams will reunite for a five-match T20I series which starts 15 March and offers fans two matches per day across New Zealand’s international cricket venues.

Last time around, New Zealand’s Black Caps won by an innings and 77 runs in an action-packed encounter, highlighted by Kane Williamson’s record-setting 190 and Neil Brand’s five-wicket haul – two feats they will hope to repeat during what promises to be an engaging final clash.

South African captain Marques Ackermann has selected an impressive squad for this tour, featuring several players hoping to make their T20I debuts such as Okuhle Cele, Gerald Coetzee Jordan Hermann Kwena Maphaka as well as young talents Muhammad Abbas and Rhys Mariu. Even with such an experienced roster in place, Black Caps remain heavy favourites to claim victory on day 1.

South Africa may make some tweaks to their side for this match, with Reeza Hendricks likely being replaced in white-ball cricket by Dewald Pietersen and Kyle Mills likely partnering him at the top of the order alongside Tim Seifert at number three.

They could also experiment with adding another seamer such as George Linde or Senuran Muthusamy or an extra spinner such as Nqaba Peter or Kwena Maphaka for extra protection in case their opposition are quick bowlers.

Match 2

After an underwhelming first innings score from New Zealand batsmen, they posted an impressive 363 total in the second.

This total proved difficult for South African bowlers and was ultimately enough to seal victory for New Zealand – although late surge from Proteas helped put them within striking distance, cameos by Rachin Ravindra and Williamson sealed victory at the death for NZ; their spinners did an outstanding job as well.

George Linde and Dewald Brevis scored half-centuries for South Africa but their efforts weren’t enough to keep pace with New Zealand’s asking rate. South Africa have now lost nine times out of 13 matches played at semi-final level since 2010! New Zealand:

Match 3

The match between New Zealand and South Africa promises to be extremely intriguing. Both teams are looking for their inaugural trophy under new coaches, and whoever comes out victorious could gain a significant edge going into Champions Trophy play.

Coaches Shukri Conrad and Rob Walter worked together on Proteas squad before facing each other head-on in competitive game – it will be fascinating!

New Zealand began their World Cup journey well, winning six out of seven matches to advance. They struggled in subsequent matches however and suffered three defeats including the final.

Still able to advance, New Zealand faced England and beat them after 50 overs were tied – ultimately decided by an exciting “Super Over”, whereby the side that scored more runs was victorious in this contest.

New Zealand was one of the dominant sides in world cricket during the 1970s and 80s, winning many Tests and ODIs while becoming only team ever to capture both ICC Champions Trophy victories twice and have the record for most ODI victories ever with 47 victories overall.

New Zealand is widely renowned for their world-class one-day and Twenty20 cricket, competing against some of the greatest sides worldwide.

These shorter games don’t necessitate teams scoring lots of runs or taking wickets; instead they focus on working as a collective unit with good overall performances.

The Black Caps are an exceptionally talented and disciplined side, boasting an outstanding record in one-day cricket.

Their bowlers stand out amongst their counterparts while their batsmen possess diverse styles that help them defeat any opposition. Their uniform stands out among its peers too – featuring silver fern badges along with logos of Canterbury and Ford as well as black for ODIs and teal for T20Is respectively.

The Black Caps stand an excellent chance of reaching the final of this tournament, having won four out of their six matches to top any other team’s record in this competition. Their chances against South Africa, who has only managed five victories thus far are very good indeed.
