Offense
Indiana Hoosiers won their Peach Bowl matchup against No. 5 Oregon Ducks with an emphatic performance, scoring touchdown after touchdown and piling up points for an unprecedented victory that put Indiana into its inaugural national championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Affectionate cheers greeted them from an excited fan base awaiting them at Mercedes-Benz Stadium!
Indiana’s offense is led by sophomore quarterback Peyton Mendoza, who is considered a Heisman contender and has amassed more than 1,900 yards through 1,925 passes this season. Furthermore, Mendoza leads the nation in passing efficiency (158.9) and boasts 13 touchdown passes with only three interceptions thus far this season.
Mendoza had an outstanding first half, using his accuracy to build up a sizable lead against the Ducks. He made 16 of 19 passes for 177 yards during this first period, taking his team into halftime with a 35-7 advantage.
As the Hoosiers continued their dominance, they slowly chipped away at the Ducks’ defense. Running for over 200 yards in the second half, their defensive backs quickly picked off any pass thrown their way and quickly picked off passes thrown their way by Hoosier opponents.
Indiana head coach Kevin Cignetti was deeply humbled by the experience. He explained how he had been patiently waiting his turn as a Power 4 head coach for over 25 years, and was excited to take full advantage of it now.
Defense
Indiana’s offense has been strong, making them a legitimate contender for the national championship, but its defense has been truly incredible. According to Pro Football Focus’s Havoc metrics (TD-ints, sacks, forced fumbles and PBUs), Indiana is producing so much more than anyone else that it’s mind boggling.
Hoosier front seven defense was outstanding against Alabama, holding them to just 23 rushing yards while sacking six times. That unit has only become stronger over time and should prove even more impressive against an Oregon team that thrives off running plays.
Curt Cignetti has done an incredible job assembling his squad this year as defensive coordinator, making them a difficult matchup for any offense.
The secondary has also been impressive this season. While veteran players such as Daniel Ndukwe and Quentin Clark have been tremendous, younger guys like Daniel Ndukwe and Quentin Clark have also excelled. If Kellan Wyatt returns, this group would become one of the premier cornerback groups nationwide.
This game will take place at Autzen Stadium and, like in their first meeting, crowd noise could play an impactful role. Indiana was able to successfully contain Oregon’s passing game and limit big plays through smart defense in that first matchup.
Oregon will be without both of their starting safeties for this game, but have sufficient depth at that position. Senior Darius Walker has been impressive this year and should provide consistency at the back.
Oregon has had an outstanding offensive year, but their defense may decide this matchup. Oregon’s unit has been outstanding this year, so in order to advance to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff they must remain at their peak performance.
Special Teams
Indiana Hoosiers are on an aggressive quest for national championship glory and their balanced yet dominant performance during Friday night’s Peach Bowl semifinal win against Oregon Ducks was evidence of this. Leading from start to finish with two rushing touchdowns, five passing touchdowns, three forced turnovers, blocked kick return for touchdown and blocked kick all made an impressionful statement about why Indiana is considered one of the premier college football programs today.
Indiana started fast and scored on their opening possession. Indiana cornerback D’Angelo Ponds intercepted Oregon quarterback Dante Moore’s initial pass, returning it 25 yards for a touchdown return. Ponds would add another interception later in the game to give Indiana an insurmountable lead at halftime.
Indiana continued their dominance after halftime as Indiana defensive end Daniel Ndukwe recovered a fumble by Oregon running back Jordon Davison, setting up Kaelon Black’s 1-yard touchdown run. Indiana then closed out their third quarter with Matt LoVecchio’s 41-yard field goal attempt before Oregon managed just seven plays and 33 yards during its longest drive of the game.
After an impressive Oregon drive capped off by WR Garren Strong completing a 10-yard pass play, they reached Indiana territory once more for one final time. But Oregon elected for a field goal instead of trying to rally on fourth down; LoVecchio kicked the game-winning kick with just over three minutes remaining in regulation play.
Oregon suffered its most devastating defeat of 2018 and one of its most embarrassing in program history with this loss, being sacked six times and turning over four of their first five drives – including an early second half fumble that would prevent any chance for comeback – for an 84-16 scoreline loss which also brought coach Mike Bellotti his lowest win total since 2001.
