1. Miller Moss
Miller Moss had an outstanding game against Miami on Friday, but it wasn’t enough for Louisville. He threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score while Louisville’s defense intercepted four of Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck’s passes – setting a school record with regards to interceptions by freshmen quarterbacks.
Louisville had multiple opportunities in the fourth quarter to take control, yet was unable to do so. They came within field goal range twice but failed to connect on both attempts; while in the final minute, Jordan Matthews lost possession and allowed a two-point conversion pass from Texas Tech to come into play after losing his fumble.
As well as struggling with scoring, the Cardinals are also struggling on both sides of the ball, including on defense where they rank 23rd nationally for rushing yards allowed per game and are 25th for third-down defense and 22nd on special teams defense.
Cardinals fans should be concerned with their offense, which averages only 289 total yards per game and has struggled to establish itself as one of the nation’s best units.
Louisville will be eager to see how their offense can progress as they begin playing Top 10 opponents like Clemson and Virginia, where they have been outscored by an average of 26.3 points on true road games so far.
As for this weekend’s match-up against Miami, Louisville has never lost at Hard Rock Stadium against them, going 8-1 all-time against Coral Gables Hurricanes since 1987.
But with Moss out with a foot injury and freshmen Deuce Adams and Brady Allen likely leading their unit, this game will serve as an important test for their young squad; without scoring efficiently they may struggle in moving up in rankings.
2. Chris Bell
Louisville’s defense played an instrumental role in keeping the Hurricanes at bay throughout an up-and-down contest on Tuesday night, intercepting four Carson Beck passes – a record number for any opponent this season – while holding them to just 334 total yards of offense.
Louisville’s offense was led by Isaac Brown, who rushed for 113 yards on 15 carries and caught nine passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns – giving the Cardinals their most productive day ever in receiving.
A native of Yazoo City Mississippi named Bell was the only player to post both rushing and receiving touchdowns during this game – ending up with the most receiving yards for Louisville players this season.
This victory marked a breakthrough for the Cardinals, who had gone winless in true road games against Top 10 teams before Friday night. They took an early lead and managed to hold onto it until the final minutes, thus ending Hurricanes’ 10-game winning streak at Hard Rock Stadium.
Losing to Notre Dame on Friday dealt a blow to their playoff hopes, dropping them down to No. 4. But, the Hurricanes still have a shot at rebounding against Notre Dame at home on Saturday – and ESPN coverage begins at 2:30 p.m. ET with Dave Pasch on play-by-play duties, Dusty Dvoracek as an analyst and Taylor McGregor as sideline analyst; you can also tune into 93.9 FM in Louisville for live audio coverage of this matchup!
3. Isaac Brown
On Friday night, Louisville scored an amazing victory by upsetting No. 2 Miami 24-21 on their home field – their first-ever road win against an AP top-5 opponent and doing serious damage to Miami’s national ranking. Louisville capitalized on numerous costly mistakes by the Hurricanes such as Carson Beck’s four interceptions; TJ Capers even managed a last minute interception that sealed it all for Louisville!
This season, the Cardinals have been much improved on defense. In the Louisville Cardinals Football Vs Miami Hurricanes Football Match Player Stats, they currently rank 22nd in rushing defense, 31st in third-down defense, and eighth in sacks per game (7.0). Not bad for a team that was picked to finish dead last in the ACC last year! Their early results show great promise, but more work needs to be done on improving passing game play and limiting turnovers.
