Mumbai Indians 180/5 (Suryakumar Yadav 73 not out, Naman Dhir 24 not out) beat Delhi Capitals 121 (Sameer Rizvi 39 not out)
Mumbai Indians used their powerful batting to beat Delhi Capitals at Wankhede Stadium and secure a top four position. Now, they hold one more win than fifth-placed Delhi and could play an instrumental part in who makes the play-offs.
Rohit Sharma edged behind for five, Will Jacks top-edged to mid-off for 21 and Suryakumar Yadav made an unbeaten 73 off 43 balls with seven fours and three sixes to help MI reach 185/3 in 20 overs. Naman Dhir also contributed 24 runs off eight deliveries with two fours and sixes as MI raced past their target in record time.
Delhi’s chase never got off the ground as their top order collapsed. Faf du Plessis became the first man out for a duck by hitting Kuldeep Yadav for short third man, before they quickly collapsed to 66-5 after 18 overs.
At first it appeared like Delhi were heading towards an overwhelming loss but Sameer Rizvi gave them hope with an outstanding 39 not out. He shared a 48-run partnership with Yadav before being dismissed by Mitchell Santner for 11. Unfortunately for Delhi however Rizvi then succumbed to Jasprit Bumrah with an excellent caught and bowled before finally succumbing under pressure himself and being bowled himself by Jasprit Bumrah for 11.
Hosts Punjab Kings scored an emphatic win to seal their playoff place alongside Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings who have also qualified. Delhi’s season has come down to the wire, and they will have to wait another year in order to try and rectify what went wrong this time around. Though currently fourth in standings with one game remaining, this performance may leave them feeling unsure. Wankhede pitch offers teams an ideal environment to score runs, with plenty of runs scored during previous matches on this surface. Unfortunately, though, bowlers won’t find this pitch ideal due to low ball pitches being ideal for spinners to take advantage of; furthermore, its surface may make reading the ball tricky due to it slipping between their fingers easily.
Scorecard
Mumbai Indians have returned from four-year hibernation and the Wankhede crowd is once more cheering them on! An outstanding performance against Delhi Capitals has put them in prime position to qualify for playoffs while showing why they remain one of the most successful IPL franchises.
MI’s pace attack took control from the outset in what was expected to be a high-scoring match against Delhi, as Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton struggled against an effective Delhi bowling line-up and both fell within 23 overs each. Additionally, Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 73 helped MI create a solid platform before Naman Dhir accelerated in the final overs alongside him for victory.
Dew, which had been expected to play an impactful role, did not materialise and the slow pitch suited MI’s bowlers perfectly. Both Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner took three wickets each thanks to their searing yorkers and intricate spin bowling which exposed DC’s middle order.
Delhi’s innings never really got going, and once Faf du Plessis and KL Rahul both left in quick succession in the 1.4th and 2.4th overs respectively, their struggles accelerated significantly as they reached 27/3. Axar Patel soon followed suit and ultimately put an end to any hope of a Delhi comeback.
Santner’s stump-to-stump bowling on a slow pitch bewildered the Delhi batsmen, who capitulated without much resistance despite Sediqullah Atal (25) and Tripurana Vijay (39) showing any resistance at all. Their score eventually collapsed to 121 all out, only Sediqullah Atal (25) and Tripurana Vijay (39) showing any sign of life against Santner.
DC were in contention for playoff spots until this defeat put an end to them and was an enormous setback, given their firepower. Their loss also ended any hope of finishing in the top two and exposed weaknesses that will need addressing for future success. Their final match will come against Punjab Kings and could decide the fate of both seasons; with Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Punjab Kings already having secured spots, it now falls upon Delhi and MI to vie for one final slot among the four.
Key Moments
Delhi Capitals visit Mumbai Indians in a high-stakes match that holds great symbolic and historical value at Arun Jaitley Stadium in a fierce rivalry. Both teams have yet to win an away game this season; should DC win, they would remain top of the table; with MI’s loss leaving them in fifth position with six games left before playoffs start.
As Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton struggle to establish themselves early, Delhi’s pace attack bowls tightly. Kuldeep Yadav’s full toss that Rickelton misses and edges back towards wicketkeeper Kuldeep Yadav picks up one wicket quickly – an early boost for their hosts!
But DC soon faced more woe as Jasprit Bumrah put on an impressive show at the other end, taking two wickets quickly in quick succession from Rahul and Rahul, the latter of whom played to play off side but edged it straight back into MI wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton at short third man.
Bumrah then proceeded to exert pressure on the home team’s middle order with devastating effect, dismissing Mustafizur Rahman for an impressive golden duck in 19th over was an unforgettable moment and effectively put an end to any chances for victory for them.
Delhi’s collapse was complete, losing three wickets within four overs to lose all their wickets and secure only 13 points from this loss.
MI’s batsmen have taken the game to another level as Suryakumar Yadav and Naman Dhir hit 48 runs in just two overs – including seven fours and four sixes – in their unbeaten innings to guide MI to an emphatic 59-run victory against Delhi rivals at Wankhede Stadium. Hardik Pandya-led MI could secure a top four finish this IPL 2025 campaign; with just a few more wins they may well make history!
