Mumbai Indians 184 for 7 (Suryakumar Yadav 57 off 39 balls)

Suryakumar Yadav had an unforgettable night as the Mumbai Indians (MI) captain not only scored an exceptional half-century, but also broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most runs scored by any MI batsman in an IPL season. But what truly set him apart was his relaxed manner while pacing his innings effortlessly.

MI were led by Yadav as they posted an impressive 184 for seven in their opening powerplay against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma provided MI with an ideal start, but it was Yadav and Hardik Pandya that proved instrumental in reaching 200 in 18 overs.

But, the spinners from PBKS – Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen – managed to restrict run-flow by using variations. Arshdeep Singh in particular introduced swing and seam spin to frustrate Rickelton before eventually earning himself a wicket when Rohit mishit an attempt and Nehal Wadhera made an excellent catch at long-on.

After losing Prabhsimran for just two runs in the opening over, young Priyansh Arya and Josh Inglis joined forces to share an outstanding 109-run stand for the second wicket which turned what appeared to be a tight game into a canter. Both players recorded half centuries, with Josh Inglis serving as an exceptional anchor role.

Though MI gave their all, their efforts weren’t enough as PBKS raced away to victory with relative ease and moved into first place on the points table after five wins from eight matches played, leaving MI in fourth spot.

PBKS will now face either Royal Challengers Bengaluru or Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 while the winner of Royal Challengers versus LSG will play third-placed team in Eliminator. PBKS have participated in final playoff for two consecutive years now – reaching final last time out but ultimately falling just short due to high scoring thriller. They hope they can go one better this time around!

Punjab Kings 185 for 6 (Priyansh Arya 47 off 40 balls)

After Rohit Sharma was injured during the Indian Premier League tournament, uncapped left-hander Priyansh Arya came forward and played an excellent innings that helped guide Punjab Kings past Chennai Super Kings by smashing nine sixes in 39 balls for victory at New Chandigarh on Tuesday. Now set for greater things ahead and may even make the national squad!

Arya entered his inaugural IPL match having only played 25 domestic white-ball matches prior to taking on an attack boasting 732 international caps and tore apart their bowling attack with ease, becoming only the second batter this season after Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Ishan Kishan to score an unbeaten double century.

Even after losing Rohit Sharma early, Arya looked calm and composed throughout his innings. The left-hander kept control by sharing strikes well with KL Rahul; together they shared an impressive 121-run sixth wicket partnership to start things off well.

Arya found his rhythm quickly with both long-on and off-side shots, earning runs with each stroke through the off side. On 74 he played an exquisite lofted drive off seamer Matheesha Pathirana that barely cleared diving point fielder’s fingers; earlier, Arya had nearly been caught at long-off off an unfortunate mishit square drive shot.

But Arya saved his best performance for last, hitting Harpreet Brar’s final over for four sixes and one single to help PBKS score 185-6 with eight balls still available.

Brar had already made inroads into MI’s batting by bowling a combination of slow and faster deliveries, first strikingly by dismissing Will Jacks and Tilak Varma in quick succession with such deliveries before slowing the scoring in middle overs by reducing run rate, then dismissing MS Dhoni for just three runs in 19th over to put a stranglehold on proceedings, before finishing them off with an excellent yorker from MI fast-bowler in final over, crushing any hopes for comeback by MI batsmen.

Punjab Kings 184 for 7 (Suryakumar Yadav 57 off 39 balls)

Suryakumar Yadav delivered six fours and two sixes as Mumbai Indians posted an 184/7 score against Punjab Kings, led by Naman Dhir who hit 20 off 12 balls to help MI secure top spot in the table – but ultimately it wasn’t to be, with PBKS winning by seven wickets in their penultimate match of the season.

MI’s innings began well with Ryan Rickelton (27 runs) and Rohit Sharma (24) giving MI an excellent start, before regular wickets fell throughout their middle phase, prompting Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar to combine forces and put on 109 for the second wicket partnership to give MI hope of reaching an impressive total score.

But the duo was soon gone, and PBKS lost three quick wickets to leave MI in disarray. Will Jacks (14) and Tilak Varma (9), both experienced potentially serious backlift injuries while going for expansive shots during powerplay.

Once IPL 2025 is underway, PBKS and MI will begin their qualifying campaigns while Royal Challengers Bengaluru versus Lucknow Super Giants final league game will determine who goes through to play-offs for second and fourth spots respectively. Losers from that final match must win to claim one of those coveted four spots!

Rohit Sharma was next out and his dismissal, caught lbw off Nehal Wadhera for an innings which featured an eight-ball six over long-on. Suryakumar then played his part in an explosive finish by smashing two sixes off Hazlewood to keep the equation within reach. Vijaykumar Vyshak eventually caught him lbw but not before contributing an unbeaten 57 off 39 balls to ensure victory for India.

Shreyas Iyer’s team won with ease against MI, giving them full confidence heading into the quarter-finals. Under his remarkable leadership this season, they took their franchise to higher heights than ever before; hopefully that same spirit remains for playoff matches; PBKS face Kolkata Knight Riders in their qualifying match while MI are up against Gujarat Titans on Friday in crucial qualifier matches that could decide their season fates.
