Promotion and relegation between divisions have taken place ever since its formation; promotion to promotion remains intact between divisions since 1982 when promoted from Yorkshire Football League/Humberside League was known by another name; both Premier Division and Division One compete at levels nineth/10th respectively on England’s football pyramid.
Division One of Northern Counties East Football League
Division One of the Northern Counties East Football League is a semi-professional English football league based in East Midlands and situated on steps 5-6 of English Football Pyramid System. Established in 1982, this semi-pro league currently comprises two divisions; Premier Division at step 9 while Division One at step 10.
The League Cup and President’s Cup competitions offer high levels of competition within its boundaries, attracting many of the most esteemed clubs from this league to higher tiers. Scarborough Athletic have been particularly dominant, having won nine times. Other successful winners have included Gainsborough Trinity and Frickley Athletic. Six runners-up who fall below this criteria may participate in a play-off against a Step 4 team to try for promotion; finally, any teams at the bottom of any Step 5 division (and four second from bottom that have suffered worst points-per-game records in all 16) will be relegated;
The Northern Counties East Football League’s premier tournament, the League Cup is comprised of all clubs from Premier Division and Division One in both of its divisions. Held over three rounds with final being hosted at Glanford Park in Scunthorpe; its winner will become champions of NCEFL.
League Cup
The League Cup of the Northern Counties East Football League is an exciting knockout competition between divisional champions of each divisional football league in its northern counties East Football League region. This season’s two winners met each other at Glanford Park in Scunthorpe for the final on Wednesday evening – it took place very successfully!
Tackley gradually increased their strength throughout, with Thackley scoring in the last minute of added time to send it into extra-time and force an unexpected upset by their opponents.
Ben Grech-Brooksbank scored late to give Thackley victory despite goalkeeper Matthew Keen being shown a straight red card early on for a tackle on Thackley striker Ben Grech-Brooksbank and being shown the door; Kevin Gonzalez would therefore play in goal from this point forward.
Guiseley of former Lions Guiseley were stunned 3-1 by Penistone Church at home in their semi-final match, even after starting strongly through former Lions striker Jake Charles early on. But Guiseley eventually fell behind to an Antony Brown goal from former Eccleshill player Antony Brown and Kieran Ryan of Penistone Church equalising; eventually Ryan fired home a winner that sent them through to the final.
President’s Cup
The President’s Cup is the premier competition of the Northern Counties East Football League. The champion club receives promotion to Division One while any club finishing at or below the bottom will be sent back down into one of their feeder leagues below.
The League was established in 1982 and currently offers two divisions – Premier Division and Division One – located across north-eastern England. Since the competition’s inception, promotion and relegation between divisions have taken place seamlessly, while additional play-offs determine who will become promoted from Division One each season.
Recently, the league has expanded to encompass clubs from Wales and Scotland. Unfortunately, this has led to numerous complications, including Caernarfon Town and Gretna being expelled from their respective league systems.
The league operates several domestic cups, the League Cup being the premier domestic tournament open to clubs in both Premier Division and Division One. Over its long history, this competition has produced some incredible talent such as former England international Michael Owen and Alan Shearer (who played as former England captains respectively) as well as current professional footballers such as many from Scarborough Athletic, Gainsborough Trinity and Worksop Town who have all experienced tremendous success playing within it.
