Ronald Koeman of the Netherlands has made some adjustments to his lineup and now features Xavi Simons instead of Joey Veerman, while Luthsharel Geertruida comes in for Denzel Dumfries who was injured.
Ianis Hagi is in and working the ball wide left, targeting Dennis Man with a cut-back weighted towards him. However, Man’s swing fails to hit its target.

Romania: Nita
Romania’s Nita has made some fantastic saves from Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo during an intense first half. Gakpo tried his luck from close range but Nita stood up well.
Nita has been forced into taking on more of a defensive role as the Dutch attack with great intensity. Virgil van Dijk and De Vrij have caused problems, while Schouten remains a threat on the right flank.
The winger is looking to find space in and around the box, and his crosses can be dangerous. Coman is also a threat on the left side, while Hagi provides Stanciu with an outlet.
Mogos
Edward Iordanescu has chosen to make minimal changes for Romania’s last-16 tie against Netherlands. Nicusor Bancu is serving a one-game suspension, so Vasile Mogos comes into the starting XI as cover left back while Florinel Coman has returned as front man – both are serving one game bans themselves.
Cody Gakpo scored against the run of play to give Ronald Koeman’s Dutch an early advantage and they never looked back, dominating most of the first half. Bogdan Racovitan came on for Mogos in the 38th minute and could feature again should Romania advance into quarter-finals.
Dragusin
Dragusin is an excellent defensive defender who excels at either four- or three-man back defense. He enjoys aerial battles and one-on-one duels with opponents, earning comparisons to Liverpool hero Virgil van Dijk as well as Manchester United fan favorite Nemanja Vidic.
On Monday, his defensive work earned him a start for Romania in their 3-0 win against Ukraine; winning one tackle, four interceptions, and 10 clearances he will likely retain his starting place for Tuesday’s matchday against Netherlands.
Edward Iordanescu’s team may lack star players like their German hosts, but they remain well organized and capable of springing a surprise in Germany. Tottenham defender Radu Dragusin and veteran striker Nicolae Stanciu are two big threats on possession.
Burca
Born and residing in Bacau, Burca started his professional career at local side Aerostar before making the jump to top flight club Botosani in 2016. A strong performance at Botosani saw Burca earn a move to CFR Cluj where he contributed towards four domestic championship wins with their club. Burca made his full international debut against Austria during a 3-2 UEFA Nations League victory and also represented Romania at Euro 2024.
Romania found themselves drawn into an excellent group at the finals, alongside England, Colombia and Belgium despite only performing poorly during qualifying. Although Hagi and Florin Raducioiu had to miss due to injury, Romania still managed to draw against England before losing out to Colombia before eventually being knocked out via Davor Suker penalty kick in round 16.
Both teams are well-organized and possess talented players, but neither will rest on their laurels and settle for a draw as an outcome. Romania will aim to keep up their unbeaten start in the competition while Slovakia looks for ways to stay close behind.
Ratiu
Romania may not boast many superstar players, but they remain well-organized and can sometimes spring a surprise. Tottenham centre-back Radu Dragusin and defenders Mihail Dumitrescu and Nicusor Bancu are reliable in defence while Nicolae Stanciu orchestrates an attack led by Rangers teammate Dennis Man.
Van Dijk, De Vrij, Ake and Schouten have retained their positions in the Oranje starting eleven. Wout Weghorst will replace Xavi Simons at left-back while Steven Bergwijn overtook Micky van de Ven to start on the right wing. Cody Gakpo will continue as main striker after scoring twice against Austria while Ratiu made an impactful return after recovering from an injury; contributing two clearances and tackles against Austria – it will be interesting to see whether he gets involved in their attack or not!
Marin
The Netherlands took advantage of Romania’s slow start to advance to the quarter-finals. Cody Gakpo put them ahead midway through the first half with an amazing strike from inside to rip a low drive past goalkeeper Florin Nita and later assisted Donyell Malen to score.
Virgil Van Dijk continues to excel for the Netherlands, and was again superb in this match. He made 6 recoveries, won 15 duels and put himself out there to make key blocks.
Ronald Koeman made three adjustments from their loss against Austria, including adding Ajax player Steven Bergwijn as one of them. Bergwijn quickly made an impressionful debut for Ronald Koeman’s side – playing on the right, where Denzel Dumfries created space for him to run into.
Stanciu
Romania needed an injection of motivation after falling to League C of the Nations League and suffering an unsuccessful Euro qualifying campaign, and coach Edward Iordanescu provided it. By building team spirit and trust among his players, Edward Iordanescu created an atmosphere conducive to getting work done with this group of players.
Tottenham center-back Radu Dragusin will lead Tottenham’s defence, while Parma striker Dennis Man will likely be relied upon to find the net. Although Iordanescu prefers more disciplined players, such as Denis Alibec who could potentially start up front, some freedom may exist for such as Denis Alibec.
Xavi Simons earns the Dutch a corner by racing into space inside Romania’s box, squares for Memphis Depay but his former Atletico Madrid forward scuffs his effort wide. Substitute Virgil Van Dijk comes close with a header from a corner, but Racovitan clears it away before it could cross the line – the Netherlands should now be two up!
Hagi
After some early scoring chances for Romania, they finally find some success on the scoresheet. Xavi Simons made close to shot attempt was saved by goalkeeper Florin Nita before shortly afterwards Virgil Van Dijk sent in a towering header that went wide of the goal; and Romania defenders Racovitan and Ratiu stopped Memphis Depay’s drive as Netherlands sought another goal.
But Dutch errors will soon be punished as Cody Gakpo seizes an opportunity and scores twice within minutes – sparking life back into their opponents. A goal which sparks their opponents into action.
Coman
Florinel Coman plays as a winger for Al-Gharafa and the Romania national football team, becoming one of the most prolific wingers in Europe each season, scoring more than 20 goals annually. Coman was part of the team that won Euro 2020 qualifying campaign but were eliminated during play-off round by North Macedonia.
Koeman is unlikely to make many changes from his side that defeated Poland, with De Jong remaining doubtful due to an injury while Schouten is out altogether. Upamaceno or Simons could potentially start ahead of Saliba.
Romania are an organized and disciplined side featuring Ianis Hagi, son of Gheorghe Hagi of Romanian legend fame. Also included on their team are Tottenham centre-back Radu Dragusin as well as Marius Marin and Razvan Marin from Valencia FC; Dennis Man, Nicolae Stanciu and Hagi are solid midfield options and boast one of the lowest transfer market values among European teams at EUR 91 Million.
