Charith Asalanka wins the toss and chooses to bat first. Washington Sundar starts things off right with a wide delivery, which results in a single run scored off it. The Sri Lanka national cricket team vs India national cricket team timeline highlights the key moments of this thrilling match.

1. India won the first Test in Colombo

In Colombo, India and Sri Lanka’s first Test proved a disjointed affair. Sri Lanka were unable to match up against Indian spin bowling – especially Venkatapathy Raju (nicknamed Muscles), who took six wickets for 12 runs on an aggressive pitch that provided plenty of turn and bounce.

At Ahmedabad, Sri Lanka finally showed some resolve in their batting. Centuries from Virender Sehwag and Mahela Jayawardene helped post an impressive total in their first innings; but in their second innings is when their true potential emerged.

They were set a target of 377 to win, yet even while struggling early, their resolve helped keep them in the game. Roy Dias and Duleep Mendis played a defiant partnership of 216 runs until bad light stopped play with all tailenders still playing.

At this match, two young players made their debut – left-arm spinner Nilesh Kulkarni and middle order batsman Ma-hela Jayawardene had both had successful domestic seasons; Kulkarni in particular excelling at Ranji Trophy competition while Jayawardene had had an exceptional school career before emerging.

The third Test at Kanpur saw another high-scoring encounter, but India prevailed by an innings and 269 runs. Indian batting was led by Cheteshwar Pujara with unbeaten 293 as they declared on 726 for nine in their first innings; Sri Lanka were led by Rangana Herath’s useful 71 in reply but ultimately it proved too little too late for their home side.

2. India won the second Test in Colombo

India took another step toward series victory with their win over Sri Lanka in the second Test at Colombo. India dominated both batting and bowling departments to put pressure on hosts Sri Lanka. Virat Kohli made history when he became the first Indian captain ever to score two double-centuries in Sri Lankan conditions; marking his fifth century against them. India only needed 419 runs in their second innings to claim victory against this formidable opposition.

India skipper Virat Kohli once again impressed, scoring an outstanding 213 in the opening innings to lead his side to an enormous total of 584 for eight. Kohli now only needs one wicket more to become only the third Indian captain ever to score five double-centuries against Sri Lanka!

On a sunny afternoon, the visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. Although Sadeera Samarawickrama (13) fell early on, Lahiru Thirimanne and Dimuth Karunaratne helped set a solid base. Unfortunately though, their middle order couldn’t withstand pressure from Indian bowlers.

Sri Lanka lost their last three wickets for only 48 runs, leaving India’s bowler Ravichandran Ashwin the most successful, taking four scalps. Dinesh Chandimal put up considerable resistance before eventually being dismissed – this marked the first time Sri Lanka were unable to contribute significantly towards their second innings score.

3. India won the third Test in Colombo

The final Test match in Colombo was an incredible nail-biter. India appeared poised for victory when Pujara was left stranded on 145*; however, Kusal Perera played an outstanding innings in helping Sri Lanka post 201 runs; Ishant Sharma proved his unmatched bowling prowess and took 5/54 wickets en route to an unrivalled performance with the ball.

Rohit batted well to see India through an important period in their second innings and finished undefeated on 50, while Binny and Ashwin also contributed significantly in helping reach a total of 386 for India. For Sri Lanka, Dimuth Karunaratne and Niroshan Dickwella were the only batsmen who managed a half century while Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal failed to impress with the bat either.

In the first innings, Sri Lankan bowlers struggled both with the new ball and old ball; Lahiru Gamage and Rangana Herath each took two wickets while Dhammika Prasanna took three for 51. Their top order batsmen also faltered under pressure of new ball bowling; none managed more than 50 runs during their innings.

But their fightback wasn’t enough to save them from an embarrassing defeat, and Ravi Shastri’s debut as India’s coach started with an impressive clean sweep – no easy feat in its own right – in three matches so far. They will need to work hard if they are to remain a competitive side away from home, though glimpses have already been given of what can happen when discipline and ruthlessness combine in cricket matches.

4. India won the fourth Test in Colombo

Sri Lanka national cricket team represents the Republic of Sri Lanka internationally in international cricket. On the fourth morning, India made an effective start to their innings. Zaheer Khan bowled an economical spell in his opening five overs, conceding only six runs before having Tharanga caught behind for 89. Harbhajan then bowled Dilshan when the ball brushed his glove before hitting his stumps – both wickets falling within eight overs!

Sri Lanka responded quickly with a strong partnership between Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka, who put on an opening partnership of 174 in 12 overs. India were eventually able to recover and made 207 all out before Sri Lanka chased down their target with six balls remaining to secure victory.

Sri Lanka had not won a Test match in England since their stunning 10-wicket victory at The Oval in 1998 and this victory represented their third of four victories at Lord’s, Trent Bridge and Headingley. England hadn’t experienced defeat against Sri Lanka since their win at Headingley back in 1992 despite dominating most of their innings but being ultimately undone by some loose and sometimes reckless batting displays by their batsmen.

5. India won the fifth Test in Colombo

On Wednesday, India and Sri Lanka played the fifth and final Test at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and won by 237 runs to take a 2-1 series lead. India’s win marks their first overseas series win since June 2011 against West Indies under Virat Kohli’s captaincy.

Indian bowlers came out strong at the end of each innings, particularly Ravichandran Ashwin who reached 100 wickets to break Muttiah Muralitharan’s previous record of 95 wickets taken over four innings.

Sri Lankan batsmen produced several clutch performances that brought the match closer, yet ultimately were unable to overcome India’s total of 275. Led by veteran Duleep Mendis’ outstanding unbeaten 117 from 88 balls he was well supported by Asanka Gurusinha (65 not out) and Mahela Jayawardene (107 not out).

Sri Lanka made up for their poor start by performing strongly in their second innings, keeping close to India’s total and featuring a superb unbeaten stand by captain Angelo Mathews (107 not out) and Kulasekara Dilshan (47) which brought an end to the match.
