Throughout the 1970s and 80s, West Indies cricket teams dominated world cricket competition. They won two ICC Cricket World Cups (1975 and 1979), finishing runners-up three other times; their dominance earned them the moniker “the unofficial world champions.”
Bangladesh made history on Caribbean soil once more by winning their first Test since 2009 and evening the series 1-1 by scoring a 101-run victory to even up the series at one all. Taskin Ahmed led Bangladesh’s success, taking 11 wickets at sub-18 average. Shadman Islam, Jaker Ali, Taijul Islam, Nahid Rana, and Mehidy Hasan were also key performers.
West Indies will look to use these next two Tests against Bangladesh as an opportunity to get back on track in their World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. They have won only four of their previous six matches and are unlikely to qualify for WTC final. Nonetheless, their home record against them remains strong, so this series could offer them another chance.
West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite has named an unchanged squad for their two-match Test series against Bangladesh, but all-rounder Jason Holder has been ruled out due to injury while spinners Kevin Sinclair and Alzarri Joseph return.
The ODIs and T20Is will be shown live on Channel 5 in Bangladesh and streaming is available through Hotstar app. In the UK and US respectively, BBC Sport and WatchESPN app will broadcast this series live as well. T20Is
Twenty20 cricket is one of the most thrilling forms of the game due to its short format and high stakes, making it one of the most thrilling forms. T20 matches can typically be completed within three hours from start to finish and scoring quickly is key for victory – in one match alone it has seen huge totals being amassed, often led by great batsmen and bowlers like those found on West Indies cricket team, who have won multiple T20Is which helped propel its rise into global fame.
Bangladesh and West Indies’ T20I series is the inaugural ever to be held in Bangladesh, but will surely not be the last. Both teams hope to take home victory and increase their chances of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup tournament being hosted by England and Wales; additionally, winning will strengthen their place on ICC T20I rankings.
West Indies cricket team coach Darren Sammy will remain as its mentor until 2025, having done an outstanding job of building unity among his players and pleasing the Board with his work. Sammy will take charge until 2025.
Bangladesh had never won a Test match on West Indies soil before and were desperate for victory. They battled hard in the second Test against West Indies to level the series at 1-1; Taskin Ahmed recorded 11 wickets at sub-18 bowling average in two matches for Bangladesh to emerge as most successful bowler of the series and win all his 11 matches overall! Bangladesh celebrated their remarkable comeback triumphantly.
West Indies have established themselves as one of the most successful teams in T20I history, winning 14 out of 28 matches played and upping their record by nearly five wins compared to their previous performance when only four wins out of 12 were registered. Their upcoming series against Bangladesh will serve as an invaluable test and they hope to build upon their winning streak; both matches are scheduled to take place at North Sound on November 22 and 30.
Tests
West Indies cricket team and Bangladesh National Cricket Team will meet for three CG United One-day Internationals and three T20Is beginning 19 January in St Kitts; their fifth international encounter. Both are undefeated so far in this series.
Early this year, these two sides faced off in the group stage of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 held in the UAE. Both teams came out victorious from their games with West Indies ultimately emerging victorious by four runs. Since then, five Test matches have also taken place between them with all five being won by West Indies.
At North Sound, Darren Sammy’s side took an early lead with their impressive first innings performance but suffered due to their subpar third innings performance on a degrading pitch. Still, Kyle Mayers’ impressive batting display propelled them to an unlikely 10 wicket victory that squared the series evenly.
Bangladesh cricket team enjoyed a historic win on West Indies soil after 15 years without victory on their home patch, which helped erase 15-years worth of defeat and improve their stats with three victories in six tests since 2009. It was truly momentous victory.
West Indies look to get off to an ideal start in their test match series against Bangladesh after falling short against South Africa in one-day internationals (ODIs). The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has named an extensive squad with all-rounder Jason Holder and spinner Alzarri Joseph set to return.
WICB have been an ICC member-nation since 1926 when Test status was awarded, having won three World Cups (1975 and 1979), two T20 World Cups and an ICC Champions Trophy during that time. West Indies hold the record for most victories in one calendar year – something unbroken since 2007’s introduction of Twenty20 world cups! In addition, West Indies were founding members of ICC.
Series
This month, the West Indies cricket team will play Bangladesh in a bilateral white-ball series comprising three ODIs and three T20Is for the first time ever. This matchup is of great significance for both sides as they prepare for World Cup 2026 qualifiers.
West Indies will aim to end their losing streak against Bangladesh this time. They have previously struggled against them in both ODIs and T20Is; hopefully this time they can reverse that trend and give themselves a shot at reaching the quarter-finals.
West Indies could use their strong performance in the ODI series to secure their spot at next year’s Women’s World Cup tournament in England through net run rate qualifying, although their loss against Thailand prevented this option. West Indies still had the opportunity of qualifying, though fell just short by one run.
Bangladesh have seen considerable improvements since making their international cricket debut, boasting both an aggressive spin attack and consistent middle order batting performances that have encouraged West Indies cricketers to adopt more offensive strategies.
Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts will play host to an ODI series starting 19 January at 2:30 PM local time and concluding on 24 January; two more matches are slated to follow with three T20Is taking place 27-29 and 31 January respectively.
