India and Bangladesh share one of the world’s most electrifying cricket rivalries. Be it an ODI or Test match, these two sides never fail to produce compelling contests that leave fans breathless.
With both nations coming together during their independence struggles decades earlier, this rivalry dates back to that point and promises some exciting tactical showdowns and thrilling finishes at this year’s ICC Champions Trophy tournament.
Bangladesh made strides toward becoming a full Test-playing nation during the late 1990s and earned their inaugural Test win against Zimbabwe at Lord’s in June 2000.
Their rise continued throughout the 2000s, winning their inaugural ODI against Sri Lanka in 2005. Furthermore, they qualified for and participated in 2007 ICC World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand by beating Pakistan before losing in the final.
Through the 2010s, Bangladesh continued their progress under coaches like Jamie Siddons and Shane Jurgensen. Shakib became one of the top allrounders worldwide; Mashrafe and Tamim became reliable openers; and their home ODI matches became formidable tests of power for them to beat.
2007 saw one of Bangladesh’s defining moments, when a young Bangladesh team led by stars like Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim were victorious against tournament favorites India in an emotional group-stage match.
This result forever altered their rivalry and demonstrated that Bangladesh could compete with even the top teams on an ongoing basis. With that success in mind, 2024 marks another important milestone as they return to major international tournaments – something which Bangladesh are ready to do again at 2024’s Champions Trophy tournament!
Tests
India and Bangladesh will play in a six-match white-ball series consisting of two Tests and three T20Is starting in August 2025, played at Mirpur and Chattogram.
The inaugural Test begins on August 17 and wraps up the following day; two more tests begin August 21 before concluding simultaneously while a final Test begins August 27 at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.
Bangladesh will visit India for a two-match T20I series starting October 6, with the first match to take place at Gwalior’s Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium and the second at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Gwalior’s T20I match between these teams will mark its inaugural international fixture since 2010, when Sachin Tendulkar became the first male cricketer ever to score an ODI double century there in 2010.
Rishabh Pant will return to Indian Test cricket after last playing one in December 2022 and Yash Dayal has received his maiden call-up, both being part of Gautam Gambhir and Morne Morkel’s inaugural squad, according to PTI.
Bangladesh have become an impressive team since joining Test cricket, as their Test performance has greatly improved and should not be taken lightly. ODIs
One Day Internationals (ODIs) are limited-overs cricket matches between two teams of eleven players, where each bats for 50 overs before scoring its total for victory. Under the auspices of the International Cricket Council and following its laws, One Day Internationals do not feature a fifth bowler unlike Test matches.
India-Bangladesh rivalry is one of the fiercest in global cricket, with fans from both nations passionately supporting their respective teams. T20Is
T20Is (Twenty Over Internationals), the shortest format of cricket, allows teams 20 overs each to score as many runs as they can within 20 overs.
This format has seen massive fan following grow significantly – it is now considered one of the most beloved forms of the game worldwide and T20 leagues have developed such as England’s T20 Blast and Australia’s Big Bash to keep fans interested.
India and Bangladesh enjoy one of the fiercest rivalries in any sport. Matches between them are frequently referred to as an Asian Clasico and it is considered one of the biggest sports rivalries worldwide.
Their fierceness can especially be witnessed during limited-overs cricket where both sides compete for ICC tournament fixtures and bilateral series fixtures.
Bangladesh currently ranks sixth in the ICC T20I rankings while India occupies second. These two sides have met three times this year – once in an ODI and four in T20Is.
Bangladesh are looking to build on their successful Champions Trophy campaign with T20Is and ODIs, possessing an elite squad capable of performing well across both shorter formats of cricket.

Bangladesh Cricket Team was formed in 1991, and since then have played in 92 Test matches (winning 68), losing 46 (drawn 15), and drawing 29.
Additionally they have also played in 153 ODIs winning 57 (losing 49). Liton Das and Rubel Hossain scored 349/6 against Ireland at Sylhet in 2023 for Bangladesh while West Indies’ score at Dhaka in 2011 was the lowest Test total against Bangladesh at just 58 runs scored against them in this Test series.
Bangladesh Cricket Team has struggled in recent years. Their performance against touring teams, especially Test and ODI series has been poor.
Bangladesh recently visited South Africa and India and lost both Test series; South Africa won both ODI series against them while their T20I series won comfortably by Bangladesh. Phil Simmons now coaches this squad. Trevor Pybus recently left.
Bangladesh won a historic Test series against West Indies during 2009-10 season and also participated in 2010 World Twenty20 where they lost all group stage matches and failed to advance beyond Super Eights phase. But after being knocked back during group stages, Bangladesh recovered to win first ever five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka during 2011-12.
At the 2022 World Cup, Bangladesh advanced to the second quarter-final, where they defeated Pakistan and Afghanistan before falling short against India in the final and extending their winless record in tournament finals.
Following this tournament, Phil Simmons was appointed as their new head coach before they traveled on tour of New Zealand and Australia where they successfully won both their Test series as well as an ODI series win.
