1. Mamardashvili

After an uncertain opening period, Georgia quickly found their footing and held off Portugal. Mamardashvili played an instrumental part in this feat – making a series of massive saves and one fantastic stop; unlike Saturday when Rayo Valladolid beat Georgia 3-1; here in Gelsenkirchen, however, his performance was outstanding.

He rises well to make a fine save from Ronaldo’s long-range free kick and alertly deny Felix’s drive, both making the day frustratingly difficult for Portugal. After great work from Metz striker Kvaratskhelia and Luka Lochoshvili’s work against Georgia defending duo Zaza Pachulia and Kvaratskhelia respectively he dives low to take away Kvaratskhelia’s feet as she searches for equaliser before keeping out Luka Lochoshvili’s header while keeping out Luka Lochoshvili as they attempt equaliser against Georgia’s first ever major tournament appearance since 2004! All praise to Georgia who continue progress.

2. Gvelesiani

Giorgi Gvelesiani (born 8 March 1998) is a Georgian footballer currently playing as a centre-back for Dinamo Tbilisi and representing his national football team, Georgia.

Mikautadze’s goal marks Georgia’s earliest ever at Euros and only nineth player ever to score all three first game goals at any tournament, joining Michel Platini at Euro 1984, Alan Shearer at Euro 1996, Hristo Stoichkov at Euro 2000, Savo Milosevic at Euro 2004, Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2004 and Gareth Bale in 2016.

Portugal are finding it hard to break through Georgian defence. Joao Felix and Ronaldo have both been denied by Mamardashvili, while Kakabadze carried the ball across and set up Lochoshvili but his effort went over the bar.

3. Dvali

Opta Match Centre provides all the statistics from this Group F encounter at Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen. These include team and player statistics, expected goals data, passing networks, an Opta chalkboard and much more!

Georgia are celebrating an historic moment as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s second-half goal gives them a stunning win against Portugal and into the knockout rounds of Euro 2024 for the first time. The Napoli defender took advantage of Antonio Silva’s careless pass near midfield to beat their goalkeeper and slot past him for victory.

Portugal are still in control, yet have failed to create any clear-cut chances. Palhinha attempted to change that when he attempted a trick pass into Ronaldo who ran towards goal; unfortunately for Ronaldo his volley was blocked by a defender and thus Portugal failed to create any real chances at this stage of the match.

4. Semedo

Mikautadze’s strike from out-of-bounds marks his third goal of the tournament and establishes him as Group F’s leading goalscorer.

Portugal continue their dominant play but are unable to break past Georgia’s formidable last line of defence. Ronaldo protests an apparent foul inside the box but referee waves play on. At full time he becomes visibly distressed before being replaced with Ramos who immediately kicks out at a water bottle after being substituted off.

Joao Martinez took a bold gamble by making such significant changes, especially given their qualification as group winners even before any ball had been kicked. Yet young talent like Neves, Inacio, and Conceicao will all start tonight as will Cristiano Ronaldo who remains one of the greatest major tournament players ever seen on a soccer pitch.

5. Neto

Georgia, after an inconsequential victory against Finland and an overwhelming defeat at Turkey, finally demonstrated their ability to stand up against top-class opposition during this group match against Portugal. They displayed steely and disciplined defense that limited Portugal’s attacking opportunities by eliminating space.

However, they proved themselves formidable counterattackers who made life miserable for an unfamiliar Portuguese team. Their performance will long remain in the memory of home fans.

At the start of the second half, Ronaldo receives a corner that falls kindly for him but his strike is blocked brilliantly by Dvali. A short while later, Felix strikes a free-kick from the right which reaches Antonio Silva at the back post but his header goes wide; Portugal are struggling to break through Georgia’s defence; Kvaratskhelia and Chakvetadze make their entrance for Georgia at halftime in place of Zariko Davitashvili and Mekvabishvili

6. Kvaratskhelia

Kvaratskhelia proclaimed Ronaldo his idol before Georgia stunned Portugal to reach the last 16 of Euro 2024. The Napoli winger was phenomenal as Georgia created an unforgettable night of football on their debut tournament stage.

Within two minutes, Georgia winger Ibrajeno scored the opening goal, as he expertly juggled and shot past Diogo Costa before placing his shot into the bottom corner of Diogo Costa’s goalkeeper glove – prompting a thunderous cheer from their supporters.

PSG player Di Maria continued his outstanding display, running circles around Portugal’s defence while often linking up with Mikautadze and Davitashvili to create chances for Georgia. He was excellent in the air as he regularly won headers and crosses. Di Mare was seen training regularly on Tuesday morning, suggesting he may feature against Manchester City but only if Paris Saint-Germain qualify for knockout stage, which would mean missing out against Barcelona.

7. Palhinha

Georgia’s young star is proving difficult for Portugal. After running past several players before being brought down by Conceicao and winning a free-kick, he takes it hard but low, only just missing the crossbar with his effort.

Portugal are dominating possession, but Georgia are proving very resilient defensively. Cristiano Ronaldo had an opportunity to score, but Dvali blocked it magnificently before protesting about being pulled down inside the penalty area but play continued regardless.

Portugal rested many first-team players during their opening game, looking disorganised against an organised Georgia side. If they want to reach the knockout stages against Spain – who currently lead Group I with two wins out of three – Portugal must improve dramatically to move up into third position and beat Czech Republic while hoping that Turkey lose to Finland (a very tall order indeed!). To do this, however, they will likely have to beat Czech Republic while hoping Turkey lose against Finland (an unlikely feat!).

8. Ronaldo

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s early goal and Georges Mikautadze’s penalty helped Georgia become the lowest ranked side ever to make the last 16 at any major tournament, defeating Portugal (6th in the world) two goals to one and becoming only 74th ranked nation globally – likely setting off another shock at Euro 2024!

Kvaratskhelia completes his brilliant run to earn himself a penalty against Silva, but unfortunately misses his shot and it goes over the bar.

Portugal are struggling to make any headway. Ronaldo’s long-range free kick stings Mamardashvili’s palms but was saved by him.

Georgia box is abuzz with activity as Conceicao heads over from close range, before Ronaldo takes advantage of his position to swing a corner-kick that Ramos misses, only for it to come back off into play wide! Portugal make their first change as Jota comes on for Neto.
