India vs West Indies

India came back strongly from an underwhelming start and produced a determined response, led by KL Rahul’s 20th Test half-century (his 20th ever). Rahul shared an unbroken 68-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal before wicketkeeper Shubman Gill joined them at the crease to see India through to tea on day one.

Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah ignited a West Indies collapse that saw them slumping to 162 all out, their lowest total against India since 2018. Siraj’s four wickets (his best figures on Indian soil) and Bumrah’s toe-crushing yorkers exposed cracks in an otherwise struggling batting line-up without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as leaders.

Shai Hope and Roston Chase formed an unbroken 48-run fifth wicket stand to slow India’s wicket-taking, but both soon fell. Hope was found out lbw to an inswinger from Bumrah that seamed away, with Rahul at slip catching it easily before Alick Athanaze drove loosely at full Siraj delivery and hit it straight back for Rahul to catch at slip. Brandon King then followed shortly thereafter when he pulled an offside delivery by Siraj to be caught behind by Rahul. India kept up their pressure and took control; with them holding onto a big lead going into Day 2.

Day 1

India posted an impressive 518-5 first innings total after Yashasvi Jaiswal scored an unbeaten century and Shubman Gill posted unbeaten 129*, and were supported by superb bowling from Ravindra Jadeja (3/37) and Kuldeep Yadav (1/45).

West Indies made a determined effort after lunch to regain their footing in the game, but struggled against an exceptional Indian side with bat in hand.

Shai Hope and Tevin Imlach did their best to keep the Windies’ run-rate up against Kuldeep but their efforts ultimately weren’t enough; both were out within three overs of each other from his left-arm spinner. Imlach attempted a single off ball five but nearly collided with Hope who was watching out for that ball; both went wide of each other in pursuit of single runs off ball five – ending their partnership before any real damage could be done to either team’s total run rate.

Jomel Warrican dropped an easy catch off the opening ball of the 79th over for Windies on this placid pitch; one of many missed opportunities on an otherwise inactive surface. Without some sort of breakthrough tactic to break through this formidable line-up, the visitors won’t stand much chance against these skilled bowlers.

Day 2

West Indies batsmen displayed some resilience and determination on day two of this Test match despite trailing by 378 runs. Under pressure to score enough runs quickly in 32 overs to stay competitive against India’s innings total of 453, they managed 114 in their last 32 overs despite losing three wickets during that process; captain Roston Chase unfortunately made his fifty but was caught by Ravindra Jadeja while trying to slog sweep to achieve it!

Dhruv Jurel is an accomplished batsman who can play the game more sedately; that may be what he intends to do here, though post-lunch he’ll probably want to score big as well. Shubman Gill also hopes to add to his score, while playing more aggressively may be in order.

Four! Kuldeep attempts to shorten his length but Athanaze rebounds and smashes it over for four.

Day 3

Khary Pierre and Anderson Phillip are holding up West Indies innings well. Together they have put on 46 runs for the ninth wicket to keep India at bay and move closer to avoiding follow-on charges.

Jasprit Bumrah bowled another tight over, only conceding eight runs – including Jayden Seales’ boundary off his bat. Bumrah used an intelligent googly that deceived Seales and hit him just outside his stumps – however the batter elected for review, yet replays showed it would have hit.

Washington Sundar has finally managed to dismiss Alick Athanaze for 7 courtesy of some leg-spin from Washington Sundar, with Athanaze’s wicket taking the Windies total to 35-2 in their second innings, following on.

John Campbell and Shai Hope are working hard to rebuild the innings against India’s disciplined bowling. By rotating strike smartly with smart nudges and singles, John and Shai hope are hoping to avoid collapse during their last session of play and form strong partnerships to secure victory.

Day 4

After an uneventful third session, West Indies showed remarkable resolve on an uncooperative pitch. John Campbell and Shai Hope shared an unbroken century stand that extended play into its fourth day at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. Though still trailing by 97 runs at day’s end, their visitors left feeling proudly determined against India’s bowlers and showed renewed determination against following-on India.

West Indies batsmen continue their desperate fight in their second innings on day four of this Test as they attempt to hold out until the final session and avoid defeat. Although two wickets have fallen for them so far, 248 runs must still be scored to win this game and avoid loss.

Ravindra Jadeja, playing at number six, has shown himself adept at handling himself and defending against good balls, taking singles without difficulty and making life difficult for bowlers on this surface.

Siraj delivers a short ball, which Chanderpaul attempts to hook but ends up slicing back down the ground where Shubman Gill dives for an impressive one-handed catch.

Day 5

B Sai Sudharsan and KL Rahul kept India’s innings under control, finding gaps on a slow pitch with patience and ease. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s early dismissal threatened to disrupt momentum but this duo rotated strikes and found boundaries when necessary – leaving India needing only 58 runs on day five to win the series sweep and give Shubman Gill an unbeaten start as Test captain of India.

Jomel Warrican bowled his inaugural over as India resume batting and need 58 runs more to win their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. KL Rahul remains unbeaten on 58, while Dhruv Jurel continues his unbeaten innings at one end.

Rahul strikes two off Warrican’s next delivery to extend his partnership with Sudharsan to 41*. Rahul shows great awareness on the field, patiently and steadily defending each ball while working his way toward his fifty.
