Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders

Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders faced off in a titanic encounter during match 25 of IPL season 7. Both teams entered with high hopes for victory; KKR are in sixth position and require three more points to advance into playoffs while CSK leads the table and have been predicted as strong contenders to claim their eighth IPL crown.

KKR won the toss and chose to bowl first in hopes that their in-form bowling unit could exploit the slow pitch to restrict CSK to an inferior total – they were right – Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy picked up six wickets between them to bring CSK down to 103/9.

KKR bowlers were relentless in their search for wickets during the powerplay. Moeen Ali made his debut for KKR and took two wickets within his first over to cripple CSK’s top order. Moeen’s pace and variation caused problems for CSK batsmen and they never looked comfortable in their crease.

CSK batsmen did not allow their bowlers’ dominance to ruin their own innings. Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar both got off to promising starts but lost momentum late in their innings. Rahul Tripathi struggled to decide between going for big hits or playing through, leading him into indecision which ultimately cost him his wicket.

Faf du Plessis joined Dwayne Smith to revive CSK from an innings low of 119/6 within 12 overs, yet ultimately fell short by 21 runs.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are one of the most well-liked IPL teams. Eden Gardens boasts a capacity of over 68,000 and is owned by Cricket Association of Bengal. In 2011, KKR made their playoff debut, only to lose to Mumbai Indians in Eliminator Round before progressing further and reaching final but losing against Rising Pune Supergiant.

CSK vs KKR Scorecard

CSK dropped to their third consecutive defeat and dropped further down the IPL table, while KKR made strides towards earning a playoff berth with their dominating performance. A disciplined bowling display from KKR helped limit CSK to only 103/9 after they chose to field, with Sunil Narine picking up three wickets in particular while Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy contributed two each as well.

As CSK struggled to gain any sort of momentum with their batting, they soon fell to 95/6 in the 16th over. A spate of late wickets added further pressure onto their batsmen but Dube stood firm, scoring an unbeaten 41 off 18 balls without facing a ball out. Dewald Brevis made up ground by smashing four sixes during his 22-ball half-century before an amazing final over from Vaibhav Arora ensured they fell short by 12 runs.

Ajinkya Rahane was disappointed with the result, yet pleased that his team tried their hardest. He applauded all his players’ effort and suggested that one big over could have changed everything for their side. Rahane believes his team will learn from this and work towards improving their batting.

CSK batsmen struggled in the Powerplay, going five down for 31 runs after just six overs. But they rallied well behind debutant Urvil Patel’s 11-ball 31 to recover quickly before Moeen Ali removed Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis quickly in quick succession to swing things back in favour of KKR.

CSK made history at Chepauk as they posted their lowest total ever and were defeated by a staggering margin. This defeat dealt a heavy blow to MS Dhoni’s return as captain and left them winless so far this tournament. To secure their playoff berth they now face an uphill task: they must defeat both Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians before winning another game within nine games remaining to stay fifth place and close the 20-point gap to RCB.
