Nassau County International Cricket Stadium

Nassau County’s new international cricket stadium opened for business Monday at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, requiring visitors to navigate road closures and tightened security before enjoying any cricket matches at Eisenhower Park. County Executive Bruce Blakeman told Eyewitness News the county successfully ironed out any problems ahead of the first matches commencing.

Construction

As soon as the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced their plans to host the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup in America, only months were available to turn a grass field in Eisenhower Park into an impressive cricket stadium. Populous’ architects had extensive experience designing permanent sports venues domestically and internationally and were recruited by Populous to develop temporary structures on Long Island in just 106 days.

Construction of the professional grass stadium pitch and significant site civil works were both part of this contract. Four drop in pitches cultivated with Tahoma 31 Bermuda grass were created offsite before being transported and installed at the stadium by US sports turf experts LandTek Group. Due to complex logistics requirements involved with shipping such a large volume of grass grass to maintain soil integrity and turf health while transiting.

The 34,000-capacity stadium was constructed using modular components. For instance, both its eastern and western grandstands were reused from previous sporting events (Las Vegas F1 Grand Prix for example), as were furnishings for premium seating locations (recycled from previous sporting events). Once World Cup is complete, everything will either return back into their original locations or repurposed as necessary allowing this stadium to continue to play a pivotal role as a hub for cricket in America.

Seating

Modular construction of the stadium was completed quickly and successfully, and its temporary superstructure and seating structures dismantled following World Cup to preserve grass outfield legacy use. Security

The inaugural ICC men’s T20 World Cup kicked off Monday morning with South Africa defeating Sri Lanka at the temporary Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. This tournament is hugely popular among South Asian and Caribbean residents living in New York; there have been concerns regarding its impact on traffic in the area. Eyewitness News interviewed County Executive Bruce Blakeman and law enforcement officials last week for more details about what measures have been put into place by Nassau County to keep fans and residents alike safe during tournament.

Blakeman said the county has been working on security plans for this event for more than a year, holding meetings and tabletop exercises with police department personnel and partners to develop security plans. They are currently creating a task force with which they’ll collaborate with the FBI on security planning efforts, according to him. Patrick Ryder, Police Commissioner in Houston and surrounding neighborhoods has stated that police will have additional staff at the stadium and surrounding neighborhoods to address any potential problems that may arise during this event. Streets surrounding Eisenhower Park will close starting at 6:30 a.m. and will reopen by 6 p.m. Ryder advised fans using mass transit or driving as alternatives such as Hempstead Turnpike or Earle Ovington Boulevard as alternatives, wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated throughout their experience.
