Toss
Bangladesh fans were thrilled as their team reached the World Cup final for the first time in history. Unfortunately, South Africa dominated in an uninspiring final match at Eden Gardens and Bangladesh was bowled out for just 144-3, leaving its supporters heartbroken. Despite Litton Das scoring an outstanding 33-ball half century that became the first Bangladeshi to 6000 Test runs ever, but their hosts still went home empty-handed from Eden Gardens.
South Africa captain Keshav Maharaj won the toss and elected to field, after dominating their three previous matches at this tournament, including an emphatic double tiebreaker victory against 2024 semifinalist Afghanistan that required two Super Overs. They rested frontline spinners Lockie Ferguson and David Miller while debutant Lungi Ngidi made her first-class debut.
Ngidi made an immediate impact with her ball, firing two sixes and fours from her first two overs – including one of her trademark slower balls that left a Bangladesh batsman vulnerable.
Nahida Akter continues to make life difficult for Proteas who are six down and needing 69 runs to win, as she bowls a stunning over. Marizanne Kapp attempts to hit Ritu Moni over the top but fails and is caught at long-off for a duck.
De Klerk skies another ball which should have been an easy catch for Shorna Akter at long-off; unfortunately she drops it! Next thing we know De Klerk hits another full toss straight down the ground for four runs!
But South Africa suffered yet again as Chloe Tryon mistimed a slog-sweep off Rabeya Khan and was caught at short midwicket for seven. Now South Africa needed 31 from 36 runs – it looked impossible – until Nadine de Klerk hit a free hit high over the covers that put South Africa within eight runs of victory! But they needed some luck as well; with eight to win they need some success now more than ever for Proteas victory though
First innings
Today, South Africa made a tremendous stride toward defending their World Test Championship crown and have the visitors on the ropes. It has been an astonishing turnaround from South Africa who struggled to even reach 159 on opening day; their bowlers, particularly Maharaj, have been superb.
Marizanne Kapp is on course for a century as she strikes out a full toss over cow corner for six. Her 50 came up quickly – just 32 balls to reach 50! – and she maintained the required rate above one run-a-ball throughout.
But in the final over, Kapp’s negligence allowed Bangladesh two back-to-back fours off the first ball of an over! Their batswoman then attempted to pull off short deliveries from Nahida Akter but was easily caught at third man for five runs.
Chloe Tryon was outstanding against India yesterday and gets another chance to score quickly from just 64 balls, but she cannot quite hold onto one from Rabeya Khan and it lands safely into sub fielder Soumya Akter at deep midwicket.
She loses control of a slog-sweep attempt in the next over, hitting it straight down for four runs instead. A couple of dot balls follow but South Africa remain hopeful for an unforgettable victory.
At first it seems they might pull it off; the crowd were cheering every dot ball and scrambled two. And then came Nadine de Klerk’s full toss but it landed safely in an open gap, giving the Proteas another single. One more dot ball followed; all-rounder Rassie Akter could guide one down to fine leg for another single to take them from 198/6 to 198/7 with two overs left to play! An incredible turnaround from a side written off halfway through. Well done girls!
Second innings
Proteas’ home season kicks off on November 15 with two Tests and three ODIs against Bangladesh; Cricket South Africa has scheduled three additional ODIs against England during December as part of their home schedule.
South Africa will defend their World Test Championship title by playing up to eight Test matches at home in 2026/27, starting with a two-match series against Bangladesh before facing Australia for three Tests before three more ODIs against England at Centurion Johannesburg.
Chloe Tryon gets off the mark early with two fours off Marufa Akter’s spin bowling, including one off her spinner Marufa Akter in successive overs as the required rate climbs above one run per ball. Nadine de Klerk then launches one into cow corner for six to bring up her half century and set the Proteas on track towards a successful partnership of 37 needed from 36 balls.
South Africa looked close to collapse after Fahima Khatun released an irresponsible single off spinner Fahima Khatun and ran out from the tail at the end of an over. Shorna Akter made an outstanding catch at long-off to keep Tryon on strike; and she reached 99 not out before she and de Klerk remained together at bat.
De Klerk strikes an astoundingly well-timed slash off Nahida Akter which is parried down the wicket-keeper’s throat by her catcher, seemingly shocked that it landed directly before her. That ball takes the Proteas down to 232-6 before they quickly chase it away for victory.
Unfortunately for Jaker Ali’s side he is out due to concussion; Mahidul Islam Ankon comes in his place and must score at least 100 runs to give their team any hope of victory in Test 2, as part of the South Africa National Cricket Team Vs Bangladesh National Cricket Team Timeline.
