Mexico vs. Suriname

Mexico will look to extend their winning streak when they take on Suriname in Group A of the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup on Friday. El Tri recorded an emphatic 2-0 win against Suriname in their opening Group A match and are tied with Costa Rica after defeating Dominican Republic earlier in the week. Edson Alvarez and Raul Jimenez scored early, with Edison Azcona adding his goal in the 67th minute for Mexico.

Suriname entered this tournament with high expectations. FIFA had ranked them 17th worldwide and managed to qualify by beating Saint Kitts and Nevis and British Virgin Islands in play-off rounds before drawing with Dominica. Their performance will need to improve to move them onto the next stage of competition.

Manager Stanley Menzo will hope for better than last week’s 4-3 loss against Costa Rica, in which his side lost an early one-goal advantage to Manfred Ugalde’s winning penalty in stoppage time. For Suriname to succeed at this tournament it needs to improve both finishing abilities and defensive reinforcements in order to create its own momentum and make an impressionful showing at international tournaments like FIFA World CupTM 2014.

Mexico defeated Suriname 3-0 in a friendly match played in 2022, and twice more during Nations League competition – both times winning with Mexico leading all-time series 4-0 and outscoring Suriname by 13-1. These teams first met during a World Cup qualifying match in 1978 where Mexico easily prevailed 8-1; since then they have met multiple times through friendly matches and Nations League fixtures.

Mexico Lineup

Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre faces some difficult decisions for this matchup. After Marcel Ruiz excelled in pre-tournament friendlies, or Raul Jimenez may return; midfielders like Jeremy Marquez, Emilio Lara, Juanjo Purata or Santiago Gimenez Cesar Huerta and Julian Quinones may also feature.

Mexico national football team (Spanish: Seleccion de futbol de Mexico) represents their nation on international men’s football competition and are overseen by the Mexican Football Federation. FIFA affiliate member and founding member of CONCACAF respectively.

Mexico is one of the most successful teams ever seen at a FIFA World Cup tournament, having qualified eighteen times since 1950. Furthermore, they participated in both FIFA Confederations Cup tournaments held between 1998 and 1999 as hosts, winning one edition as hosts – making Mexico unique among non-European/South American countries by reaching both quarter-finals on four occasions and rounds 16 in seven instances before eventually winning their global competition title in 1999 as hosts.

Mexico football team enjoys strong support in both America and Mexico, which makes for two significant rivalries in world football. When these nations meet on the pitch, matches often capture public and media interest with significant media coverage as well as lively public discourse in both nations.

Suriname has never reached the FIFA World Cup finals, but its best showing came at the 1978 CONCACAF Gold Cup when they came second in their group stage. Nearly upsetting Costa Rica in their opener but ultimately losing 4-3 would confirm early group-stage exit with just one match remaining at Estadio Azteca; regardless, Suriname will look to make history against Mexico at Estadio Azteca!

Suriname Lineup

Suriname has participated in World Cup qualifying games since 1962 but has never made it to a finals tournament. On 26 March, Suriname will hope for change when it faces Bolivia in the second leg of its inter-confederation play-off match. Henk ten Cate, its newly appointed head coach has named a squad that includes some players with dual nationality status.

Although the Netherlands lacks an official football league, Dutch-Surinamese players have still managed to represent their home country internationally due to dual citizenship being discouraged in Suriname while there being opportunities to qualify for all top divisions through professional play in the Netherlands.

Ten Cate has named Radinio Balker of Huddersfield Town FC and Joel Piroe from Leeds United as players to represent Suriname against Netherlands at underage level. Both players previously represented Holland.

Gleofilo Vlijter will look to extend his national team tally for Suriname against Mexico. After being held scoreless against Costa Rica, he will hope to open his account against Mexico.

El Tri will look for a stronger performance after their disappointing loss against Dominican Republic in their home Gold Cup game, marking only the first ever time they lost at home in this competition’s history. While their chances of defending their crown may have taken another blow with that result, they do still have an opportunity against lowly Suriname to bounce back against. Mexico Goals

Mexico’s early win against an improving Dominican Republic put them in prime position to reach the quarterfinals. Victory against Suriname will guarantee at least three points and secure their progression further in this competition.

After an uneven first half, El Tri rebounded with some quick flashes of attack during the second period at Estadio Azteca Stadium; none of which developed into any serious chances. Meanwhile, fans at Estadio Azteca stadium became restless, loudly venting their disapproval at officiating decisions and shouting insults towards referees before breaktime chanting “culero” (“fucker”) against one referee in particular.

Mexico maintained their advantage throughout the third and final period thanks to a series of quick counterattacks which led to close-range shots from Mexico captain Javier Hernandez inside the penalty box that were eventually deflected wide for corners.

Alvaro Fidalgo scored in stoppage time to seal Mexico’s win and set off wild celebrations from their fans. This goal marked Mexico’s 107th goal at this tournament, joining only two other teams that have scored that many.

Mexico National Football Team, commonly referred to as El Tri (Spanish for “the tricolor”) is a men’s national association football team based out of Mexico City that represents their nation internationally in international competitions and is administered by the Mexican Football Federation. El Tri has competed at eighteen FIFA World Cups; reaching both knockout rounds twice; becoming one of only six non-European and South American countries to have ever won one World Cup title!

Suriname Goals

Mexico will look to build on their performance against Dominica Republic when they face Suriname in Dallas. Mexico must beat this 137th-ranked nation by at least two goals to secure their place in the quarterfinals.

Mexican national team players have proven themselves among the strongest in the world throughout this tournament. Although their skills and determination are impressive, recent matches have left them struggling to score goals; therefore, improvement must occur quickly if they want to make any significant inroads into rankings.

Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre has made some unorthodox selection decisions ahead of their match against Suriname, including dropping experienced players such as Gerardo Arteaga and Uriel Antuna. Instead, Aguirre and his coaching staff have focused on tactical discipline and physical conditioning to optimize player performance – an approach which has proven itself successful before and may prove fruitful against Suriname’s unranked status.

Suriname are looking to rebound after suffering an opening round loss against Costa Rica 4-3 in their opening match, so winning this contest and hoping that Costa Rica loses against Dominican Republic would provide them with any chance at reaching the quarterfinals.

Suriname benefits from its historical ties with the Netherlands, giving the national team access to several professional footballers who have developed their careers in Dutch and other European leagues. In the Suriname National Football Team Vs Mexico National Football Team Lineups, players such as Anfernee Dijksteel, Kenneth Paal, Immanuel Pherai, and goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen showcase the growing quality and experience within the Suriname squad. Recent changes to eligibility rules have allowed more Dutch-born players of Surinamese heritage to represent the country, strengthening the team’s competitiveness in CONCACAF tournaments. While dual-nationality regulations have evolved over time, these additions have significantly improved Suriname’s depth and international performance, making matches against strong opponents like Mexico even more competitive.
