England 216 (Jason Roy 85 & Joe Root 67)
Jason Roy provided another timely reminder of England’s white-ball credentials by once again proving his worth in an important match for England against Australia in Melbourne on March 9. Since rejoining after Alex Hales was suspended following Ben Stokes’ Bristol club incident, Roy quickly proved his worth – smashing scores of 84 and 96 against India before heading Down Under for what could prove his ultimate test as an ODI batsman.
He may not have reached century, but he still played an essential part in England’s total and helped set up a big score. England were soon put under pressure as Rohman Powell and Shai Hope started off strongly, sharing an opening partnership of 98 runs; but their hopes of an unlikely comeback quickly faded away as pressure mounted against them.
England’s batting struggles would worsen further as Alex Lees and Zak Crawley were sent packing by Kemar Roach, while Joe Root and Dan Lawrence took control by dominating West Indian bowlers with an outstanding 201-run partnership that dominated their West Indian opponents before Root was finally dismissed by Alzarri Joseph leaving England stranded at 296-8.
Now aiming for 286 runs, England would approach their task efficiently. They lost some early wickets as Buttler and Brook were dismissed quickly, but then Bethell and Tom Banton found each other and created an opening partnership of 63 runs between them for the third wicket – giving England some respite as their innings imploded before them.
Mitchell Starc started off his ninth over and was quickly hit with trouble as Joe Root swung it to deep midwicket for a boundary, taking his score to 67 off 65 and providing an outstanding contribution.
Glenn Maxwell made an incisive stop at backward point to deny him further runs – something which would have been of tremendous help as hosts are currently on 216/2 after 31 overs.
West Indies 189 (Rovman Powell 79 & Shai Hope 45)
As expected, England bowlers dominated the first half of West Indies innings before failing to form any partnerships in the middle overs, which cost them dearly. Jos Buttler showed his class once again with some fine hitting at the end. Sherfane Rutherford dropped an unlikely low chance off Alzarri Joseph off Jos Buttler off Alzarri Joseph but it did not derail him from adding 63 with Ben Duckett for second wicket before both wickets fell quickly – though that didn’t prevent England showing they had great depth with batsmen like Tom Banton and Jacob Bethell as batsmen!
Rovman Powell and Shai Hope played well to keep the Windies scoreboard ticking over, getting some movement against spinners while finding some room in the field – Powell was particularly impressive by hitting several boundary balls during his final few overs.
Adam Zampa delivered fuller-length deliveries, only to be punished with several fours from the batsmen. Later he hit another four through covers before driving one for six over long on.
Marcus Stoinis then delivered a short ball on middle, which Powell took full advantage of to drive between the covers for a single. Later he used a late cut shot at deep square leg to collect yet another single run.
In his next over, he unleashed a six over midwicket off Adam Zampa to give his side an immediate lift.
He then quickly flipped back the spinner back over his head, racing to hit another six over the long on fence for his third SIX!
Kuldeep Yadav then produced the moment that would change everything: an edged delivery from Kuldeep Yadav was only inches away from nipping under and striking Hemraj’s bat, racing towards off stump for an attempted catch, but somehow Hemraj managed to bring down his bat in time and save himself from being caught out.
Hemraj’s survival is a welcome boost for the Windies, but they will require plenty of luck to win this match. To do so, they must remain together and not lose too many wickets in the lead-up to the final over; otherwise chasing a target of 189 will prove very challenging indeed! England will Score 216 (Joe Root 102 and Zak Crawley 68)
To begin their innings, England would open with Alex Lees who would soon be dismissed by Kemar Roach for 6 runs when their score had slumped to 24-1. However, Joe Root would then join Zack Crawley at the crease and together they dominated West Indian bowlers to amass a 201 run partnership and Root would complete his 2nd century in international cricket before eventually being dismissed by Alzarri Joseph for 109.
Jason Holder and Nkrumah Bonner would then provide the Windies innings with some much-needed stability as they posted an unbroken stand of 79 runs for the fourth wicket. Unfortunately, however, David Willey struck another blow by dismissing both Russell and Sammy simultaneously in one over, leaving the Windies at 319-6.
Marlon Samuels (MAN OF THE MATCH) Samuels earned Man of the Match honors following an outstanding performance in the World T20 final. He believes he always steps up in big games and says his intention was to steady England after they lost early wickets. Furthermore, he wants to show respect for England players by not taking Shane Warne’s comments personally before concluding by saying he wants more trophies for West Indies in 2024 and will return.
