Bangladesh vs Pakistan 1st T20I

Bangladesh will host Pakistan for their opening T20I at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday after taking an impressive series win against Sri Lanka, hoping that skipper Salman Agha can make an impression with his new-look side as they prepare for next year’s T20 World Cup hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Due to injury concerns several regulars such as Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan as well as fast bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah will miss their first T20Is in Dhaka.

Bangladesh have an edge when it comes to their batting ability with all four of their top batsman having previously participated in BPL seasons. Opening batter Parvez Hossain Emon should provide Bangladesh with plenty of runs at bat and has already scored five sixes and three fifties over his past two innings for Bangladesh.

Tanzid Hasan will also be an asset to Bangladesh in terms of scoring runs during their match with Sri Lanka, having scored an outstanding 73 not out off 51 balls against them last time out. At 24 years old, this left-hander loves hitting over the covers and has the ability to loft the ball effortlessly.

Pakistan’s batting got off to an inauspicious start as Taskin Ahmed quickly removed both Saim Ayub (6) and Mohammad Haris (4) within one over of playing their openers early. With two openers now gone for Pakistan, their hopes quickly fizzled out as both were taken off by Taskin Ahmed within an over.

Pakistan batsmen attempted to strike back, but were unable to put together enough runs and eventually fell short of reaching an acceptable total. Additionally, their fielding errors proved costly.

Towhid Hridoy became the fourth Pakistan wicket to fall when he was run out attempting to hit a quick six off Abbas Afridi’s short delivery, looking to break his partnership of 73 runs with Salman Mirza. Unfortunately for Hridoy he was caught at deep midwicket as he attempted to clear the ropes with his bat swing.

Parvez Hossain Emon’s unbeaten 56-run knock

As Bangladesh chased down an easy target of 111 runs in their opening T20I match against Sri Lanka, Parvez Hossain Emon led his side with an unbeaten 56-run knock to put them well on track for success. Emon was part of an unbroken 73-run partnership between himself and Towhid Hridoy that yielded four wickets with 27 balls still left, setting up their win by four wickets with 27 balls still to spare and marking their biggest T20I triumph ever.

Pakistan were always playing against an effective Bangladesh bowling attack led by Taskin Ahmed, and that pressure showed from the very start of their innings. Tanzid Hasan Tamim was dismissed in Salman Mirza’s first over, followed by Litton Das in Salman Mirza’s next one as they struggled on a tricky Gaddafi Stadium pitch. Fakhar Zaman made an attempt at anchoring his innings with 44 runs before being dismissed due to mix-up in middle order while Mohammad Nawaz ran out similarly in similar fashion.

Taskin then struck gold when they won the crucial wicket of Faheem Ashraf in the 15th over, to leave Bangladesh just 66 runs shy of their target. With eight overs remaining and Towhid and Emon trading boundaries at both ends, Emon struck the winning boundary off a pacey Faheem Ashraf delivery on full off stump – his fourth six of the innings! Towhid was bowled as his seventh wicket fell.

Young opener Bangladesh opener Taijul Islam has proven his worth on international cricket and will look to build on his impressive display against Pakistan in future games. Already scoring over 300 T20I runs this season, 24 year-old is becoming one of their key batsmen for limited overs cricket – potentially being an asset moving forward. His experience and temperament help him deal with high pressure situations – something which should serve him well when tournaments come around; his domestic record also bodes well; having scored several big hits in the Bangladesh Premier League this year will boost confidence further.

Towhid Hridoy’s 73-run stand

Bangladesh started their innings off slowly after losing Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Litton Das within three overs, but Hridoy and Parvez Hossain Emon reassembled it carefully during the Powerplay period which saw them reach 38-2 after six overs. Debutant Salman Mirza jolted Bangladesh with two wickets; firstly taking away Tanzid with a sharp throw that reached Fakhar Zaman at mid-on before forcing Litton Das to hit one off Mohammad Haris slips during which Salman Mirza also struck twice against Litton who could then hit drives directly at Mohammad Haris who took Mohammad Haris for six runs off Litton Das’ bat before finally retiring Litton drove onto Mohammad Haris at slip.

Bangladesh was in control at this point, hitting two huge boundaries to bring up 57 for 1 in the 10th over and seizing control of their destiny. But they would have been disappointed to see Hridoy fall to Abbas Afridi shortly thereafter; his fuller delivery straight to extra cover resulted in three sixes for him!

Although they were dealt a devastating blow, the Tigers refused to succumb and set out in pursuit of their target within 17 balls for an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the series. Emon and Hridoy had combined on an important 73-run stand while the latter was within touching distance of his second T20I fifty.

Bangladeshi pacers produced an outstanding bowling effort against Pakistan to limit them to 110 in 19.3 overs. Taskin Ahmed produced three wickets while Mustafizur Rahman excelled with economical bowling efforts. Fakhar Zaman attempted a comeback, scoring 44 balls before succumbing to fatigue on such an uneven pitch and failing to complete his innings.

Salman Mirza’s 2-fer

Salman Mirza struck early to put Bangladesh on the back foot. The off-spinner proved effective during the initial powerplay over, making any form of progress with bat difficult for Pakistan and leading them down an aggressive path that nearly backfired as they fell well short of target.

Mahedi Hasan strikes again! Bangladesh get off the mark early. Fakhar Zaman attempts a hard sweep but only manages a top edge that goes flying towards short fine leg region; Taskin Ahmed mishandles it and Bangladesh gain one run from this over.

Taskin Ahmed delivers another good over for Bangladesh as they pick up another wicket in Faheem Ashraf’s first over from Taskin Ahmed – this time on offside where Faheem Ashraf attempts to flick it away but only succeeds in getting an outside edge which ran past deep midwicket fielder and over the rope. Umpire calls for review but replays show it would have been an easy catch had Faheem Ashraf been caught cleanly at slip.

Taskin Ahmed to Jaker Ali, Out! It was an effortless run out that proved crucial for Bangladesh. In response to an off side delivery full and quick enough for him to try cutting, Jaker Ali attempted going over extra cover but instead was caught by Ahmed Daniyal at boundary ropes as his run out was confirmed on screen by its flash.

Pakistan were unable to capitalize on their early start, picking up several wickets in the middle stages that may have helped them build on it further. Instead, Parvez Hossain Emon and Tawhid Hridoy helped steer Bangladesh towards their target within 15 overs – they will look to consolidate and prevent collapse over the remaining overs.
