Afghanistan vs Bangladesh
Afghanistan has endured decades of violence and instability, yet their national cricket team has emerged as an impressive success story. Over just 10 years it has progressed from Division 5 with Vanuatu and Mozambique to becoming the second Associate nation to qualify for T20 World Cup 2020 with some experts labelling its group a “Group of Death.”
Given their country’s turbulent history and international sporting success generally being determined by cultural roots and domestic structures, their rapid ascension is remarkable. Yet thanks to a combination of talent, perseverance, and an unwillingness to put aside politics that surround their sport they have achieved this remarkable breakthrough from behind the shadows.
With multiple returning players for the ODI series against Bangladesh, Zimbabwe will aim to build upon their win against Australia by finding solutions for their batsmen’s disappointing performances throughout this tournament.
On the bowling front, India will look to improve from their disappointing showing against Windies in the opening ODI. Spinners in particular must step up their game if they hope to make an impressionful statement and create havoc on an underperforming pitch.
The next ODI between Bangladesh and India will take place at Shahid Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida and mark their first match back since March 2020. According to TOI sources, BCCI has given Afghanistan permission to play three ODIs and as many T20Is here in India to aid preparation ahead of their World Cup appearance in 2021.
1st Innings
After beating Australia in their opening match of the tournament, Afghanistan have put themselves in prime position to qualify for the semifinals of this year’s ICC Cricket World Cup. Now looking ahead, they hope to defeat Bangladesh and seal their place at this next stage; an win over them would also ensure they top their group and an easier matchup against Sri Lanka.
Taskin Ahmed takes their first wicket as Litton Das is dismayed to edge an attempt at cutting him straight to first slip by Taskin’s short ball to his off stump and edges it away for an edge straight to first slip.
Litton Das and Rahmat Shah have performed admirably, although Bangladesh have failed to score enough runs at an adequate rate to meet the required target rate. Spinners are doing damage; should they continue picking up wickets frequently it will make reaching their target nearly impossible for Afghanistan.
Afghanistan have several big hitting players in their team but nothing seems to be working in their favour at present. Nabi and Naib are playing expansive shots but don’t seem to find gaps for them to hit through. Afghanistan are in for an uphill struggle as their wicket seems to become less appealing with every passing hour.
Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan is relishing the prospect of facing Bangladesh in their final Super Eights match. These teams have met 19 times ODIs; Bangladesh lead 10-11 while Afghanistan have won six out of their last seven matches and would become the first team ever to advance to the T20 World Cup semi-finals with victory at Saint Vincent.
2nd Innings
Bangladesh tied the series after beating Afghanistan in the second one-day international (ODI). The final ODI will take place Wednesday on the same ground and has already seen 19 meetings between these teams, with Bangladesh winning 11 of those matches.
Afghanistan have managed to impress at this tournament despite all of their drama, winning an emotional 21-run win against Australia on Saturday evening and showing strong form against all teams they faced along their journey to reaching the semi-finals. They should field similar squads that helped get them so far.
Afghanistan’s batsmen have performed admirably against the new ball; however, as the pitch ages some batsmen have begun to struggle – it will be intriguing to watch how spinners respond.
As it seems like some dew has fallen here, Afghan batsmen will find it increasingly challenging. Miraz has come on and bowled very nicely; his turn in his deliveries is helping him.
Rahmat Shah took an elegant run-up and hit Mustafizur through covers to score his fifty, showing that he appears to be in some form.
Nasum takes Ghaznafar’s wicket as they try to sweep it on the leg-side slog sweeper. A brilliant day for youngster and debut ODI match stalwart. Now the required run rate has started increasing and someone will have to play hard and fast in order to sustain this run chase.
3rd Innings
Bangladesh are struggling in their pursuit of 244 runs and require a miracle in order to have any hope of victory in this game. Dew has begun to set in, with Mustafizur having shown himself much more dangerous this evening and making life hard for Afghanistan batters.
Rahmat Shah continues to play beautiful shots down the track and dances down it effortlessly before hitting Mustafizur through covers to bring up his fifty. It has been an outstanding innings from Afghanistan’s number three and seems to have settled nicely here.
Nabi then rose to the challenge by unleashing an amazing six against Mustafizur that hit straight through midwicket for six. Afghanistan were on their way to victory now!
Nahid Rana to Mohammad Nabi in fuller and on middle position; Nabi attempts to free his arms but is ultimately defeated and then tucks it under extra covers for an attack run.
Mustafizur Rahman to Mohammad Nabi: Off-cut on middle and outside off; Nabi attempts to attack from downtown but only slices through backward point; however he won’t be disappointed!
Shoriful Islam to Azmatullah Omarzai short on off, Omarzai clears his front leg before lofting it long for a SIX!
Afghanistan win by 5 wickets! They complete a series victory against Bangladesh in Sharjah with some outstanding batting and bowling performances! A truly entertaining match saw some incredible hitting from both teams; we look forward to more live cricket action next time around!
4th Innings
After an uncertain start, Afghanistan have established their dominance here. Many Afghan batters, led by Atal who is looking particularly adept on this pitch are playing some beautiful cricket; Bangladesh batsmen however seem unable to keep pace with its slow nature and an odd ball which provides spin.
At the water break it was shared passage and as Bangladesh batted on, their early promise seemed to fade gradually. They still have a very strong chance of winning this match but will need to enhance their batting even further for success.
As we reach the final session, the old-fashioned ODI cricket has been evident. While runs were abundant, wickets also came at regular intervals. Farooqi seemed off his game today as his lengths and overpitching allowed Afghanistan batters to take full advantage of that mistakenness; Nabi missed several targets too while Jaker Ali, making his debut, seemed out of sorts as well.
Afghania may be better known for its military history, yet their national team stands as an impressive international sporting force. Packed with passion and belief, this squad hopes to build on their excellent showing against Bangladesh on Monday night. Marylebone Cricket Club Foundation UK have initiated a fundraising initiative in support of this cause and hope their campaign can ensure their future and development.
