Scorecard

The inaugural Test between Bangladesh and South Africa was packed with excitement, showcasing both teams’ talent and skill on cricket’s grandest stage. Each boundary, wicket, and strategic move was critical in determining its outcome – captivating fans worldwide while sparking intense debate over its key moments.

Bangladesh were fortunate enough to win the toss and bat first, yet still struggled with early wicket losses and lack of partnerships in their middle order. They persevered though and ultimately managed to reach a competitive total; their bowlers also excelled with Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal making crucial contributions; though over-reliance on star players during high pressure situations highlighted areas for improvement for Bangladesh.

South Africa put on an impressive fast bowling performance on day two, with Rabada, Bedingham, and Muthusamy each taking multiple wickets. At bat, Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, and Wiaan Mulder all achieved centuries to help reach an impressive 575/6 total in their respective first innings innings scores.

On Day Three, Bangladesh were reduced to 48/6 after struggling against quick bowlers in their middle order. Mominul Haque and Taijul Islam did offer some hope before both being dismissed by Senuran Muthusamy; but their resistance could not last, and Bangladesh were bowled out for just 212 in their second innings.

Both teams had high hopes heading into their match and were eager to show their mettle on an international stage, yet their first match proved close with several nail-biting moments. West Indies’ history of high-pressure performances and dramatic turnarounds added extra drama, while Bangladesh showed they are becoming one of the premier teams worldwide.

West Indies victory enhanced their confidence and solidified their standing atop the standings, assuring they are ready for upcoming tournaments. Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s loss served as a wake-up call, emphasizing their need for consistency and clearer game plans in high-pressure situations. Post-match interviews provided insight into each players mindsets; each acknowledged a need to improve and prioritize goals moving forward.

Day 1

Since South Africa reemerged as an international cricket nation in 1992, Bangladesh have been but a minor threat in their ring. Their Bengal Tigers have managed to make little headway against South Africa’s strength; only winning six Test and ODI matches against them overall in both Test and ODI cricket formats combined.

That isn’t to say Bangladesh are poor cricketers; rather, South African batsmen and bowlers have always been superior. Faf du Plessis, David Miller and AB de Villiers all scored tons against Bangladeshis teams; often being decisive factors in many games between both teams.

On a good batting track in Port Elizabeth, South Africa began day one at full throttle as they raced toward an impressive total. Openers Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs set things off before Kyle Verreynne produced an astounding debut ton and shared an important 119-run partnership with Wiaan Mulder to further increase South Africa’s lead. Both batsmen were assisted by outstanding fielding from captain Aiden Markram and fast bowler Kagiso Rabada which enabled their success on day 1.

After an initially slow start on day two, Bangladesh batsmen rallied back with three key partnerships. Mominul Haque and Taijul Islam both scored half-centuries while Mehedi Hasan formed an incredible 67-run partnership with Ariful Islam – their innings stood out as an important cornerstone of Bangladesh’s fightback attempt.

Rabada once again showed his prowess behind the bowling attack by decimating Bangladesh’s top order with his swing bowling, moving both ways and extracting extra bounce from the surface to finish with six wickets for South Africa and strengthen their position even further.

South Africa captain Aiden Markram was delighted with his side’s performance as they won their inaugural Test match in Bangladesh for four years. Markram noted how well South African bowlers exploited conditions well, offering numerous learnings from this game against an impressive opponent like Bangladesh. Markram considered it particularly special that victory came against such formidable opposition.

Day 2

South Africa was dominant on day three due to their bowlers, especially Kagiso Rabada who took six wickets to put his side into an advantageous position. Moving the ball both ways and getting extra bounce off the pitch, Rabada managed to quickly unsettle Bangladesh batting order early in their innings and put them on the defensive early on.

Aiden Markram set his side off to an outstanding start as he and Tony de Zorzi combined for a dominant opening wicket partnership of 319 runs for the Proteas before Taijul Islam crushed their hopes of reaching an impressive total when he dismissed de Zorzi for just 141.

Kyle Verreynne then shined for South Africa as he scored an excellent century on an ideal batting surface. In addition, he shared an outstanding 119-run partnership with Wiaan Mulder (his maiden Test fifty) giving them an early 202 run lead before Dane Piedt made his contribution and further extended their advantage.

Bangladesh put forth an improved performance during their second batting essay, yet it wasn’t enough to give them any hope of victory. Mehidy Hasan and Jaker Ali batted magnificently to keep Bangladesh competitive but poor shot selection, dropped chances, and poor light saw this session end with Bangladesh all out for just 143 runs.

South Africa have taken an impressive 2-0 advantage in the three-match series and appear poised to secure their place in the World Test Championship final for this cycle. Only twice before have they won consecutive Tests on Indian subcontinent!

Aiden Markram was extremely pleased with his team’s performance today. He commented on their players being dedicated, hard-working, and excelling under trying conditions. Aiden also notes how successful bowlers exploited conditions when toss was lost, including Kyle Verreynne who scored an excellent century. In recognition of these efforts he awarded Mushfiqur Rahim with an Appreciation Crest while Taijul Islam and Kagiso Rabada received them respectively for reaching 200 and 300th Test wicket.

Day 3

Light has improved slightly, yet not enough for play to resume. Unfortunately, the umpires have decided to call an end to play for today – leaving Proteas hoping to finish quickly so as to move onto Abu Dhabi Test soon enough.

Kagiso Rabada and Wiaan Mulder both bowled impressively today as South Africa bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Wiaan Mulder dispatched Bangladesh’s tail with ease. Aiden Markram must have been pleased by his team’s performance, especially as they kept Bangladesh at bay despite losing three wickets early.

Mehidy Hasan and Jaker Ali gave Bangladesh hope of recovery during an innings loss, sharing an unbroken 138-run partnership for the seventh wicket – something Mehidy Hasan could not do on her own.

Rabada claimed his second wicket of the morning immediately following lunch when he ran through Mushfiqur Rahim for 24 runs and followed it up by dismissing debutant Jakher Ali for 50 in two consecutive overs.

Mehidy Hasan pushes down her line but gets hit on the outside edge by an off-speed short delivery on middle and off that angles away from him, but still manages to push down in time and deflects back to square leg where Tony de Zorzi dives to take an easy catch.

Mehidy Hasan attempts a pull, only for it to roll past his thigh pad and into easy territory for the keeper to gather up.

Taijul Islam to Mehidy Hasan: Leg byes, two runs on back foot pushing down ground; Mehidy goes down to swipe ball off her bat but misses and the keeper fails to stop it from flying past.

Kyle Verreynne earned the first Appreciation Crest of this series for his outstanding century performance in game two. A relatively recent member of the team, Verreynne says he simply tried his hardest throughout each match and tried not to become distracted from his task during any games on tour. Furthermore, this trip marked his debut visit to India – however he felt ready for its conditions!
