Ravi Shastri
Ravi Shastri has a wealth of experience in all formats of cricket, and is known for his strong leadership. He has a clear vision of where the team should be headed, and his hands-on approach to coaching has been evident in India’s recent white ball successes. His direct communication style has helped the players to trust him, and he is able to keep them focused on the task at hand.
Ravi’s legacy has been shaped by his emphasis on creating a team culture and fostering resilience. He has led the Indian team to historic test series victories and a world cup final, leaving a lasting impact on the game.
Ravi’s team has also benefitted from the implementation of data analytics, which allows him to identify areas for improvement in player performance. He has also added mental conditioning to the training program, which helps players to develop their mental toughness.
Lalchand Rajput
A right-handed opening batsman, Lalchand Rajput was a promising domestic player but failed to translate his form onto the international stage. He played 2 Tests and 4 ODIs but failed to score any runs for India.
Besides having a successful first class career, Rajput has also held several administrative positions in the Mumbai cricket association. The former India batsman was also a part of the Harbhajan-Sreesanth altercation in which he was seen laughing when Harbhajan slapped Sreesanth.
Bishan Singh Bedi
A great first class cricketer, Bedi is a legendary figure in Delhi and Indian cricket. He has a unique and feisty style of coaching. He has never been afraid to speak his mind and has come out in support of a player or against him.
Whether it was calling Murali a javelin thrower or painting Harbhajan with the same brush or saying that T20 cricket is suffocating or IPL is nothing more than money laundering Bedi sir has been a man who speaks his mind.
In his heydays as a spinner he played 67 test matches and took 266 wickets with 14 fivers and one tenner. He also played many first class matches in England and is the second Indian after Farrokh Engineer to have taken over 1500 wickets in English first class cricket.
He was a great captain and is remembered for being very strict with players when it came to fitness. He would ask them to run in the cold even when it was raining and make them work hard. His honesty and outspokenness has always made him popular among the public.
John Wright
Indian cricket has become one of the world’s most dominant sports teams. This success is attributed to exceptional leadership, with national team coaches providing valuable guidance to players. Their coaching philosophies have influenced both individual player development and overall team strategy.
Their skills include technical expertise, adaptability, and player management abilities. Their philosophies also emphasize fostering a positive culture and maintaining an effective training framework.
John Wright has a long list of accomplishments as an Indian cricket coach. His dedication to building team spirit helped India win the Nat West Trophy and reach the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup. He also implemented mental conditioning sessions to help players cope with pressure and stress during critical matches.
He was also instrumental in developing MS Dhoni, and he is known for his focus on fundamentals. His calming demeanor and strategic insights make him an excellent mentor for young talent. His coaching strategies have made an indelible mark on Indian cricket history. He has an extensive knowledge of batting, bowling, and fielding techniques.
Gary Kirsten
After Ravi Shastri stepped down, it left a big gap for the Indian cricket team coaches to fill. The current coaching staff has picked up right where Shastri and his men left off and have been phenomenal in the white ball format. They are all ready to take the Indian cricket team to new heights in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Kirsten’s first series as coach was a home Test series against Australia in 2008. He has also coached the Hobart Hurricanes in the Australian Big Bash League, and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.
Kirsten’s technical expertise has helped him develop precision strategies for batting, bowling, and fielding in cricket matches that are played across three different formats. He also has excellent leadership skills that help him motivate his players and foster team solidarity.
Le Roux joined the India coaching setup after serving as the Strength & Conditioning coach for the Kolkata Knight Riders of the Indian Premier League for six years. He has a strong working relationship with Gautam Gambhir, who is the current Indian Head Coach, and this likely played a role in his appointment to the national team.
Ramprakash Kulkarni
Kulkarni, who had guided Mumbai to the Ranji Trophy title during his last stint as coach of the domestic giants, also coached Vidarbha and Tamil Nadu in his coaching career.
He has also been the batting coach of the Central Zone and Nepal cricket teams. In 2018, he coached the Physically Challenged Indian team to win its first-ever world cup title. He will be assisted by a senior selection committee consisting of Akshay Darekar, Rohit Jadhav, Kiran Adhav and Salil Agharkar.
Bishan Singh Mazumdar
The list of India national cricket team coaches features some great names. From Kapil Dev to PR Man Singh, many have had the honour of coaching India. The first foreign coach to lead the Indian side was former New Zealand captain John Wright. He coached the team between 2000 and 2005. He led the Indian team to a Test series win against Australia and helped them reach the finals of the ODI World Cup.
The next coach to take charge of the Indian team was former Australian batsman Gary Kirsten. He coached the team between 2007 and 2021. He took over a team that was low on confidence, and helped them return to the top of the rankings in both ODIs and Tests.
But he was unable to replicate the success in a group stage exit at the 2007 ODI World Cup. Clearly, the team needs a visionary coach who can reignite that fire. Someone who can provide stability and accountability to a team full of superstars. Someone who can handle the big egos that exist in the Indian dressing room.
Ramesh Kanitkar
After Ravi Shastri stepped down as the Indian cricket team head coach following the 2021 World Cup, a big hole was left to fill. But the current coaching staff has taken over and have done an amazing job in white ball cricket, winning every series.
Sitanshu Kotak is the batting coach, and was appointed to this role in January 2025. He has a decade of experience with Kolkata Knight Riders and impressed both the BCCI secretary Jay Shah and NCA head coach VVS Laxman.
Ramesh Kanitkar is a former domestic cricketer who made his name with the Maharashtra cricket team. He has a strong grip on the game’s technicalities, and is especially good at guiding young players.
Ramesh Kanitkar is one of the recognizable members of the support staff, thanks to his trademark delivery. His fast balls can leave batters in stitches, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni often refers to him as India’s “foreign pacer”. Kanitkar is also renowned for his ability to read pitches and bowl in the right conditions.
He has been a key player in India’s recent successes on overseas pitches. The Indian Cricket Team Coach List highlights the contributions of coaches and support staff who help players improve their skills and performance.
