IU – 186 passing yards

After forcing punts on Miami’s opening two possessions, Indiana took full advantage of the short field with a rapid drive.

Mendoza threw a 25-yard dart to CJ Daniels to convert on third down. Beck found him open over the middle for 15 yards to set up first and goal at five. Tight end Riley Nowakowski found his way into the end zone on subsequent plays to give Indiana an 11 0 lead.

Indiana’s offense continued its strong play in the second quarter, culminating with a 91-yard drive capped off by Beck’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Toney.

Bain sacked Mendoza on their next possession but the Hoosiers marched all the way up to Miami’s 38 before kicker Nicolas Radicic hit a 34-yard field goal for a 17-3 lead at halftime.

Jamari Sharpe made two timely interception near the end zone that sealed Indiana’s victory against Miami in the second half. Indiana’s defense sacked Miami quarterback Brock Osweiler seven times while holding them to 139 total yards; earlier in the game running back Mark Fletcher ran for 109 yards on 17 carries and scored twice.

Indiana Hoosiers amassed 141 rushing yards as they secured victory at Hard Rock Stadium before an audience of 67,227 in College Football Playoff Championship Game.

As time ticked away in the final minute IU drove toward Miami but Jamari Sharpe intercepted their pass which sealed their victory for Indiana.

A native of Miami himself, Sharpe leapt up quickly to intercept an underthrown pass as Miami drove into Hoosier territory with less than one minute left and no timeouts remaining – giving Indiana time to take a knee and celebrate their win.

The game started off as a defensive battle, as both teams failed to score touchdowns until Mark Fletcher’s 57-yard run gave Miami their only score in the fourth quarter, giving them a 10-7 advantage and giving them control of the final period.

Indiana responded quickly on their next drive by converting two fourth-down attempts, thanks to Fernando Mendoza and Beck’s 19-yard pass to Charlie Becker for first down. Although Mario Cignetti initially wanted to attempt a field goal instead of going for fourth down conversions on fourth down, kicker Carter Davis’ 50-yard attempt went wide right.

Indiana began the fourth quarter with a series of long drives that helped them secure a comfortable lead. Their drive culminated with Mikail Kamara blocking a punt which was recovered by Isaiah Jones for an end zone touchdown score.

Indiana won its first-ever college football title with this win against Miami, marking their first national title since 1996 and first under current coach Curt Cignetti, who succeeded Kevin Wilson after Wilson stepped down in 2024. Indiana broke numerous team records during its 2024 campaign, including total yards and points.
